Do auto workers make too much money for what they do?
I hear arguments both ways, but I think the thing that has stuck with me most was told to me by a good friend. He is a corporate accountant and his wife is a teacher, both college educated. He told me a while back that his neighbor across the street was bragging that he made more money working at a GM plant than they did combined, and he only had a high school education. He showed them his pay stub and sure enough, he did. He said he never dreamed he would make so much money doing so little. He sure didn't sound like the typical union leader trying to defend the wages and benefits they receive. He came right out and said it. He makes too much money for what he does.

The short answer is yes - domestic car companies (the big 3) are not competitive because they have very lucrative pay scales for line workers, and have tremendous benefit packages as well. Those are much better than the US average. In particular, the retirement and medical benefits represent a huge future liability for those companies, The bailout won't help that without requiring substantial restructuring - including new contracts from the UAW.

it's not the wages so much as the benefits - Most union worker benefits are outrageous - My company pays some union workers $8.00+ an hour just towards pension ($16,000+ per year), and typically well over a $1000 a month towards health insurance - even if the worker is single and single coverage costs less than $400 a month, while us office workers only get a 401k match IF we contribute to the 401k plan, and maxing out at maybe $2000 a year if you contribute the maximum amount that gets matched (6% of my salary-the company will match 50% of what we contribute), while those union workers don't have to contribute any of their own money to pension of health insurance (most regular people pay 25% of the health insurance premium) - I just read the auto companies have to pay several dollars per hour for every active worker to pay for the FULL health benefits that 280,000+ RETIRED auto workers get - no one I know that's retired gets their full health insurance paid, in addition to a pension that probably equals the pay they were making when they were working. I'll be lucky if I have enough to live on 1/3 of what I make when I retire. The total hourly benefits of an auto worker are more than their base pay.

If all unions lowered their benefits closer to revels that Non-Union people get, everything would cost a lot less and more people could be put back to work

Most auto workers get paid too much for what they do. Unions were necessary a long time ago but now have helped to destroy the American auto industry. I hope the government continues to reject bailout for the Big Three and any other industry that requests it. An industry that refused to adapt to the needs/wants of its customers deserves to die, hopefully the unions will too.

How about the fact that they make so much for pushing a button on an electric screw driver..That the average cost of a car is $2000-$2500 more just because what their payed..And they wonder why we buy Japanese cars..

Contrary to what you may have heard, the wages aren't that much bigger than what Honda, Toyota, and other foreign manufacturers pay employees in their U.S. factories. While we can't be sure precisely how much those workers make, because the companies don't make the information public, the best estimates suggests the corresponding 2007 figure for these "transplants" -- as the foreign-owned factories are known -- was somewhere between $20 and $26 per hour, and most likely around $24 or $25. That would put average worker's annual salary at $52,000 a year.

I just heard that Toyota and the other foreign-made cars that are made in the states, pay less than the big 3. Look who's begging for help. I'd love to see the CEO's live on the $1/year they promise if they get the loan.

I feel bad for the 3 million people out of work if the big 3 go belly up, maybe everyone should take a paycut. However, it's not the employee's fault, so don't blame them. It's the company's fault for paying that amount in the first place.

ABSOLUTELY! U.S. Auto Workers are the highest compensated laborers on earth.
