Im looking for a part time job now, and Ive been hearing alot on the news about many companies (some of which Ive applied to) laying people off. Friends of mine with 4 year degress are having diffucutly finding employment. With the econmony slowing down should I just give up on trying to find a job???? |

There are layoffs and hiring going on at the same time even in the same company. It really depends on the department and the type of people. Good companies may try to move people before laying them off. But sometimes, you need a specific talent and there is no one in house, they will hire people. Also sometimes, they will take part time people and layoff fulltime because they are cheaper - no benefits. |

yes, there are companies whose administrators are wise enough not to spend a lot of money for permanent employees...what they do is hire a new one and terminate the old ones...don't ever give up in finding a job...if you know your worth you can find one in HIS perfect time..just a combination of prayer and effort will be more effective..if its for you, then it will be given to you..just a little patient dear...:) |

Of course they hire and fire at the same time. There are differing skill sets requirements on a changing basis. There are also those that do not cut the mustard that get offloaded and replaced. |

Hi,
Many companies hire and layoff at the same time. This could happen when one division is going well, and other is not. It can also happen just to balance the scales a bit. Say for instance there is a need for more sales force, but less marketing, etc. I don't think that you should stop looking for part-time work. There are plenty of jobs out there, but you may have to resign yourself to the fact that you are not going to make as much as you would like to be making.

yes many companies will hire people then say in 3 months if we discide to keep you on, we will give you a rise and you'll qualify for bennifits. at almost 3 months they let you go claiming that their bosses arnt making enough money.. what they really mean is that its cheeper for them to hire people and let you go before they have to pay for your pay raise and bennifits..this exact thing happened to me with home depot.
i was mad and really upset because i worked so hard for them but never give up! i didnt and now i have a great, reliable job.
my advice is to just not apply for any of those home depot stores and huge corportations...retail in general. try waitressing if you want to and/or secretary positions.

ps, just saw someone said somethign about unemployement, you can not collect unemployement (at least in my state) if you have worked for less than 6 months at the same place. |

Hire and Fire... that's the motto of most companies... but yours should be "Never say die, just keep trying". Don't worry about the economy, just bear in mind that all employers employ because they need someone to get the jobs done... so if you have the right skills and attitude... you need not worry too much of what's happening around you. |

Companies do this all the time. It's just crazy. Doesn't make any sense. This especially happens in high tech. |
