Do hourly employees get paid for traveling?
Hi All,
I'm an hourly employee at a company and they want to go to a different country for some work. Do I get paid for every hour that I'm on the road since I'm an hourly employee?

Thanks

There's a federal law in the United States that deals with this issue. It's called the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA, 29 CFR § 785.39). All employers in the United States must comply.

You must be paid when traveling over multiple days as long as the business travel cuts across your normal work hours, regardless of what day of the week the travel takes place.

Let's say you normally work Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm. Let's say you are required to travel on a Sunday for business in another city. In that case, your travel time on Sunday between 8:30 am and 5 pm must be paid.

On the other hand, time spent traveling to an airport or train station does not have to be paid. But once you arrive at the airport or train station, all the time you spend there waiting for your plane or train must be paid.

So let's say you leave home on Sunday at 2:30 pm, you arrive at the airport at 3 pm, your flight takes off at 4 pm, and your flight arrives at your destination at 6 pm. Your employer must pay you only from 3 to 5 pm. That's because those are the hours that correspond with your normally scheduled work hours, even if you don't usually work on Sundays.

Also remember that these hours count towards the number of hours you work that week. Any hours worked after the fortieth hour during the same work week must be paid at an overtime rate (time and a half).

The only question is whether the Fair Labor Standards Act applies while you work outside the United States...

OK.. You'll get paid what you normally get paid. You may get a mileage stipend, but, that's something you need to talk about BEFORE you leave, not after.

Technically you should, but every company has a different policy on that. I have been an hourly employee and traveled for work. My travel time was always paid for (here in CA).

It depends on what you work out with them. I would ask.

Depends on your work terms and regulations. Every company is different!!
