Why are people so negative towards Wal-Mart?
Is this because they are a big corporation? Do people know that most retailers only pay a little above minimum wage and that minimum wage has nothing to do with Wal-Mart?...

Do you believe the US is heading into a recession?
Or do you think the media is over-reacting?
It's proven that if enough stories pound this idea into people's heads, it will become a self fulfilling prophesy.

Yes.....at least where I live (a large area in Florida) -- rich people are losing their homes and manufacturing companies who have been in this area for over 20 years are closing down (including WELLCRAFT) -- I was laid off for 3 months -- am 49 and NEVER been out of work so long in my life --- then again, it could just be Florida -- the news states people are not ready to move here anymore because of all the companies closing and people not being able to sell their homes and so so so many people losing their jobs.....it's REALLY BAD HERE.

From economic indicators, like the dollar, banks and the mortgage debacle, we are going into a big one. The Fed Reverve have always create money out of thin air, but when they start doing it out of proportion to the real revenue that they get from our taxes, a tax system they themselves devised to get real wealth, you can bet there's gonna be a big one. Lets hope that it will be the end of those criminals.

It could be the power of suggestion causing it, but we do seem to be heading that way quickly. I live in an area that normally has lots of employment. But now it is hard to find a minimum wage job here, many people with degrees trying to find jobs are having to settle for pizza hut, and I mean many, places that have high turn overs. Everyone is trying to keep thier man power down as much as possible because people are spending less so they are making less profit and don't need tons of people working at once to take care of way less consumers. And because it is harder now, jobs that are a bit better but not great, like WalMart, peole that would usually be moving on to better things are holding onto their jobs cause there are way less of those better jobs to move onto. Only the best of the best are getting the few best jobs around that are open. As a result of everyone hanging on to what they have, there is less turnover so less available jobs altogether, plus many layoffs going on as well. It's a vicious circle, so many people are making less now or laid off or getting less hours at work that they are of course spending less which cause the layoffs and low hiring rates, etc. The price of gas soaring has a lot to do w/ this in my opinion, prices are going up as a result, (it costs those semi's more to carry the products to the store and electricity is up so it cost more to make the stuff and keep cold and warm, etc.) people even travel to the store less since it costs so much to. People are traveling and vacationing less, even people considered in higher than average income brackets, killing tourism money counted on by places everywhere. And I'm sure people see the news on this stuff and then hold onto their money even tighter which causes the snake to eat it's own self even faster as well. (orobores???)

We are in a recession. I think a lot of it is due to the media.

beckjar
we're already in one and have been for the past 3-6 months.

I definetley believe as you do. That when the MEDIA keeps hammering on the Negative .....they cause it to happen. The MEDIA definetly has an Influence. SO they could also hammer the POSITIVE and help !! But when do you ever see Positive News Media ??? Positive Happy is not a RATING booster. That Financially well to do group who owns the Stations could care less if they bring down our country. They only care about their pocket as effected by their Ratings.

It's not that it's a self-fulfilling prophesy, the fact is that large Fortune 500 companies are seeing fewer orders for their products coming in. This is a sure sign of a recession, at least in it's early stages.

Additional signs will include more big layoffs like AMD's layoff of 1,000 employees announced today. They're laying off because there's no orders for the products they're selling, therefore they don't need the employees.

This is just like the economic disaster that happened to the economy in late 2000 and early 2001.

The USA, if not now then later. will see a recession because it is a cycle of economics. Keep in mind the middle class will feel the pinch long before the stock market shows it.

What is making the current situation look worst then it is are the uncontrolled oil prices coupled with the inflation rate of over 6% for last year.

I believe that when you compare and contrast the economy and our nations spending habits before and up to the great depression, and our habits now....it does seem likely, though the media is over reacting.

No one can say for sure when an economic recession will happen. But you can be 100% certain that some day it will happen.

Economic recessions are a normal part of the business cycle. And such recessions happen regularly.

When their are no jobs and no construciton going on everything starts coming down it is like a deck of cards.
When one thing goes they all do.
All the scare tactics and over reating will not cause it to happen if everyone has a job and a place to live and are happy. It is when they don't that it happens.

What do you mean heading? We are in recession damn Busah...

Irish
Not really. If it's not a recession the big buyers will come in and buy everything cheap. Those who don't belong in the market or are not in for the long haul will bail out. It's still buy low, sell high, but most people continue to do the reverse. I don't think there's a recession. Big price correction yes, but it will all average out in the long run. The media can't influence the market anymore than anyone or anything else. In fact, less.

It's proven that if enough stories pound this idea into people's heads, it will become a self fulfilling prophesy. this is how it now works in the modern era.

It can be avoided with leadership unfortunately we do not have any
