Collapse? No. Hurt? Definitely. There are about 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. Most work. Taking 12 or so million people out of the workforce would wreak considerable havoc.
The industry that is likely to be hurt the most is farming; fruit and produce are tended to primarily by migrant workers from Mexico, some legal, some not. |

Doesn't surprise me, I'm from South Texas and alot of businesses here use illegal aliens. They take lower wages so of course businesses jump on that. |

When you frame any statement with absolutes, you introduce the probability of error (or, in your terms, "untruth").
Would the economy be in trouble? Most probably! Would the economy of New York and the entire nation collapse? Doubtful. After all, we're coping with the economic damage done by the disaster of 9/11; I imagine we'd find a way to deal with the loss of that segment of our work force. |

Completely untrue.
Illegals function at the fringe of society and while numerous, they are still not a significant economic force. Consider their May Day strike, which was pretty much a bust across the country. The major functional operations are still accomplished by accomplished people who can demonstrate solid reasons for being there. Now if telecommunications, power, and water were all necessarily a function that has to hire illegal aliens in order for us to live in the civilized fashion we are accustomed to, that would be a problem. Right now, we would have a slowdown in some sectors (certainly not all) of agriculture, food processing, general cleaning, and trash pickup. Wages for low skilled American workers would go up if the cheap labor snuck in were scooted out. |
