i worked for Orange mobile phones for over a year in their call centre in Darlington, Co. Durham, so i got to see how a very large call centre operates. what do u specifically want to know about them ?

personally i would not want to work in one again. i felt like one of those battery farm chickens. we worked in a massive open plan office with row upon row of desks. the call takers were split up into 'teams' of about 12 workers, with a Team Leader in charge of each group. we used to have a computer, a keyboard and a mini switchboard for each operator, and we were 'wired' up to it all via one of those headsets that has a microphone that's connected to the headset (kind of like what u see helicoper pilots wearing. lol). the thing that used to p*ss me off most was that you had call statistics to maintain. u were expected to be able to take a certain amount of calls every hour, and had to explain yourself if u didn't. u weren't allowed just to sign out of your computer and go for a toilet break / coffee, u had to put your hand up and get official permission before u were allowed to stop working. made me feel like i was still at school. also, i got sick of taking call from abusive customers. i've had customers who've threatened me personally, purely because i was doing my job, i had more than one person who called up just to talk dirty (weirdos getting their sick kicks) and alsorts of other strange calls.... for instance, some guy rang up whilst he was taking part in a pub quizz... he was wanting help with the answers !

the staff turn-over in places like that is huge, mainly because of the working conditions and nasty calls that u have to put up with day after day... when i left Orange, i believe their staff turn over was about 60% every year. people are quick to complain about call centres, but i think that they should reserve their criticism until they've tried working in one.

they answer calls..
tries to help you whatever your problem is..

then..

they wear jackets, sweaters, sweatshirt..heeheehe,,
because they spend all day or all night(depends on duty)
sitting on their comfy? chairs answering calls..
and they froze to death because the air condition
is in maximum level..
to help them from being sleepy..

unlimited coffee..everyone knows why..

they answer some of the dumbest question but
some are mind-twisting one's..

that's it..

Call centers are essentially contact centres where usually a large number of employees for for one or several companies. The customers usually get connected to one of the customer service rep, sales rep, helpdesk rep generally through a toll free telephone number. Though the information is largely dispensed telephonically, it may also include email correspondence and even regular mail. Also there are call centres exclusively dealing with market research, telemarketing and surveys. The environment is usually internet enabled and the reps use some kind of CRM tool to retreieve customer's data. For the past decade, there has been a major offshoring of call centre jobs from developed countries like the US, UK, Canada to engish knowing countries like India, China, Brazil, Malaysia.

Yup, kinda like a secretary. They take the calls, and then pass along a message to the recipient.
