Do you have to be ruthless to really succeed in business?

can i be your pet?
It means having or showing no pity or mercy and I don't think it's it's necessary. It's not even necessarily a good character trait to have in the first place. Being self centered doesn't give you an 'edge' over anyone else.

You just have to be a good decision maker. You have to be realistic. it helps a lot to be a good judge of character. Being ruthless can be a handicap if you can't make good decisions and you can't see the good and bad points about anyone.

A business minded person will recognise potential and spend their time advancing themselves. So long as you do something everyday to improve yourself and your situation then you'll be fine. Planning and decisioning make good business. Ruthlessness can destroy it and unless you're seriously jaded, you certainly won't enjoy it.

Ruthless: callous, brutal, pitiless, merciless, cold-blooded, hard-nosed, unfeeling, hardhearted, heartless.

Not necessarily ruthless, but you cannot afford to be overly sentimental and cannot take any bull droppings from anyone

Yeah pretty much! Don't "beat around the bush" so to speak. If you want something.. You gotta just go for it and be persistant.

With the people my 'old' company promoted, I used to often ask 'do you really have to be that stupid or brown-nosed to succeed in this company' The answer was 'No, but it helps....'
It's not just the Business world that is to blame.....just look at the world of showbusiness....and recent so-called 'celebrities'

b c
Yes.

alan
I would say more firm it the better way

Ammo
You sure do

Mick
Yes for you can,t afford to carry passengers when your working for your self .

Harrison Cheung
Yeah, mow down anyone who gets in your way.

Moby
Yes and no.....depends on your situation!

If your in sales, being motivated and extroverted is key to being successful. My experience (Operations Manager) tells me every situation is different. I have built an extensive network of contacts and business accounts by being reliable. You can be as ruthless as you like, but if you can't deliver then it makes no difference.

I'm am very successful in what I do and I am NOT ruthless. I know my industry and I know what I can and cannot do......I'm realistic! Some environments breed ruthless behavior (auto sales, large corporations, sports), but you CAN be successful and still enjoy what you do and treat people with respect.

Mindrape
Yeah, you do

naughty_ikkle_angel
yes
