Do you have to pay for your desk at work? if so how ignorant do you think this is of upper management?
If you are talking about covering your "desk cost" as a sales person - that's a pretty normal practice in all areas of sales.
Hey you! I'm receding

My first reaction is that I have not heard of anything so absurd. However, there are many different compensation plans these days and if you have a unique compensation package that offers offset incentives or something, is could be plausible. The sales position thing with compensation based on commissionable sales makes sense to some extent, but they should not require you to pay for the desk right off the bat. If they offer work from home scenarios where you are not obligated to occupy a desk that you have to pay for could make sense from the perspective that they are providing the tools (desk/computer/phone) for you if you choose to use them, but you are not required to take that route. Bottom line in my opinion, it sounds a bit cheesy.

Are you a consultant or contractor? If so, that may be a normal thing.
If you are a regular employee, well that is just plain insanity.
