Be. | Do you think a company can make profit and be good? |
I'm not talking about benefits, or low prices for customers or how a company may affect you directly I mean on a larger scale. Is it good for the economy? Good for people in the long-run? For people everywhere? Corruption? BIG problems they cause? Etc.
In class today my teacher asked us if we thought that a company can be 'good' as in morals and ethics and still make a profit. A lot of people said no and brought up Wal-Mart.
But what about any company, Do you guys think all companies are morally corrupt/bankrupt or do they have some redeeming qualities? |

I think many people missed your point. It wasnt said that a company is bad if it makes a profit. The question really is "can a company still make a profit and be responsible doing so?"
I believe that a company can be good and still make a profit. I plan on proving that personally in the near future. There are a lot of corrupt companies and I hate a majority of Corporate America, but that doesn't mean they are all bad. For example, I think Apple, Inc. is a pretty decent company. They are one of the most environmentally friendly manufactures of computers. They have an amazing relationship with their customers. They don't sell out to pushy tactics like those of WalMart. They protect their trademarks possibly a little to excessively, but with what happened to them in the past you cant blame them. There are probably better examples, like one that doesn't outsource at all. |

Well its tough to say but it is possible but some corners would be cut
Eg Microsoft they are making tons of products but like their manufacturing process and they slave labor wages
We are in a capitalist economy where profit means everything and in order to make this profit corners have to be cut |

So ask your teacher where she would get food or clothes if there were no companies. If she thinks they are run by bad people then she is part of the problem by supporting them with her business. Companies offer a service if you do not like WalMart you do not need to buy from them. If you do not think they treat their employees properly don't work for them. Just like some bad people rob banks, some bad people own companies. That does not make all or even many companies bad. It is easy to blame everything on bad companies or big business but if you see something wrong why don't you change it instead of just complaining about it. Especially a teacher! |

There is nothing wrong with a company making a profit. It is the profit that allows them to invest, expand and hire more employees. The profit also goes back to the investors as dividends for their investment.
A lot of people bag on Wal-Mart. No they don't pay union wages, but they do pay a decent amount given the job skills that are required for most positions. (Sorry, if I offended anyone, but retail is not really a skilled job). They do offer health benefits, retirements, etc. They also provide low cost items to the consumer.
If Wal-Mart paid like the union grocery store, their prices would be hire and that would not benefit the consumers. |

There are companies out there that are not immoral and corrupt that make profit. I think at some point down the road someone who had a good idea sees that being unethical will earn more money and more profit easier and turns that way.
*sigh* |

Stupid question--it presumes that the societal good is defined only in a PC sense. The millions upon millions of individuals companies pay who support their families and their communities is the only answer necessary--anything else is icing. I'm not arguing that the icing is bad, just that the question being asked is intrinsically stupid as it is individuals that make the decisions, not some robotic company. There is no such thing as a corporate decision, only decisions made by individuals within a company making decisions for the whole, the company—consequently, there are good companies and bad companies. |
