Absolutely. Overtime, as the word implies is time put in over and above the regular shift. In my mind the higher rate of pay is justifiable because not only does it serve as an incentive to the employee, but it is also compensates the employee for the sacrifice that he/she is making.
It is no secret that life requires a balance and that all activities have to have time allotted to them in order for one to live well. In that respect when someone does overtime it is at the expense of another activity and that sacrifice should be compensated.
In practical terms, I might decide to work overtime on a Saturday because I want to buy a flat screen TV. That Saturday I will miss out on my kids, going to the gym, or whatever it was that I had planned.It's only fair that I get something extra for the sacrifice. |
