YES!!! In all likelyhood one, two or even all 4 of the ones you mentioned could fall.
Huge powerhouses have fallen or eventually gobbled up by competitors over the years. There were a time when names like Woolworths, Montgomery Wards, PanAm, Polaroid, Kodak were huge staples in American business and society. Companies like Standard oil were broken up due to its size and control much like people have threaten to split up MSFT. I notice you didnt even mention microsoft but some people say Google could eventually run them out of business.
You have companies today such as Xerox and AOL that were once power houses but are now shells of thier former selves/worth. Look at the US steel industry that once was a force but now can't compete with cheaper over seas products. I mentioned PanAm but think more recently to the powers in the Airline industry that had to file bankrupcty. Look even at Compaq computers which is now part of HP a company you listed.
What about the car business. Ford, GM and Chrysler have all had severe financial problems lately. Ford created the middle class in this country and it was once said that what was good for GM was good for America. All three are on life support by most accounts and Chrysler has already been bailed out by the government once before. Lets not forget all the names that have disappeared, AMC, Packard, Studebaker.
Some companies may go on for centuries, but each company is always just 1-2 generations of management and customers from closing its doors. Competition is fierce and you can not rest on your past accomplishments. Ever heard of Disney? Well in the late 70's early 80's Disney almost folded. Can you imagine that? |

If you had been around for a long time you would know they come and go all the time. This person is a genius at making money and he starts a company. Then it is handed down to his disfuncytional children who are spoiled rich kids. They run it into the ground with greed and poor money practices.
Years ago there was Montgomery wards company that was like Wal Mart is today. That was were everyone went.
Gottschalks, was the store for clothes. Mervyns and sears was the only places you bought clothes. Sears is still in the business but not as popular. You never hear of the other stores. What about K Mart, it was bigger than Wal Mart until someone said they were run by satinists. They all come and go. Politicians come and go and even religions.
When was the last time you passed a church worshipping service for Ashtoreth the goddess of the sidonians and after Milcom the disgusting thing of the Ammonites.
Or Chemosh the Idol of Moab.

and where are these people?

I think they are going to allow themselves to grow so big that eventually they just won't be able to control their own companies anymore. and that will lead to the downfall of Wal-Mart, Google, and such. |
