I have mixed feelings about them but overall don't care for them. When I first went to work for the city of C******* in 1968, the union was small and had little power. The city gave us 2, 3 or 4 raises a year, based on our performance, our anniversary date and we always got a cost of living raise, sometimes 2 a year if the cost of living kept going up. As time went on, the A***** got more of a foothold and basically took over the city.
Two things I resent ~ making everyone who works for the city pay them, even though many are not fully represented by them unless they pay the full amount. They take that money and go on so-called meetings in Hawaii, Florida, Las Vegas and other sunshine states where they can have a good time and enjoy vacation on someone elses money.
As an American citizen, I should have a right to give my money to those I feel will serve me best. The A***** only represented the left wing politicians, which was evident by the expensive mailers we got everytime there was an election. I don't need them to waste my money to tell me who to vote for ~ I can read the newspaper and determine that on my own.
The other thing I resented about them is how they would represent a worker who had gotten in trouble, although that worker had every right to be called on the carpet time and time again. I saw this happen over and over with one person and the woman was a big time abuser in every way but everytime someone got on her or wrote her up, she yelled discrimination and like jack***** they are, they went with the whimpering "employee" over and over again and she skated free each time. THAT is not fair to the employees who try to put in an honest days work and also paid that S****d union money they had no right to take from me and many others in the first place. Robbery is robbery and there is no way they can justify forcing a citizen to pay them when they don't want them to represent that employee ~ but that is what you get with a union.
I used to really admire the FOP because they wouldn't uphold an officer who was in the wrong, although they were there to see that they were treated fairly when they were disciplined. Unfortunately, Stokes and Capretta have retired (both were excellent and fair) and from what I see in the only paper in town (which I take with a grain of salt, knowing their liberalistic stance), the new president sways on both sides of the fence sometimes. I find it hard to admire someone who can't make up his or her mind what is right and what is wrong ~ no backbone.
Some unions are good, some aren't, but the problem is if you want to get one in somewhere, you never know which way the wind will blow as time goes on. Unions get too big and they get too much power and that is where things go awry and too many innocent people pay in all the wrong ways.
Does that answer your question? lol I could tell you more but won't go into it here but overall, I made out better monetarily before the union took over the city of Columbus and overall, the bosses took care of their employees. They disciplined those that needed it and they showed their appreciation to those who really worked hard, took pride in their job and did their best. Heaven forbid if anyone were kind to anyone anymore. The place has turned into a bunch of back stabbers who don't care who they wipe their feet on and help each other cheat every chance they get.
I have removed the "Welcome" from my back and I wouldn't give the A***** or any other union the time of day unless they were to clean house ~ and with the money they make off everyone to lead an easy life, that isn't likely to happen. |

I worked 17 years in a Co. with a union and now 13 years in a Co. that is non-union. Here people are often promoted based on how they get along with the boss. People are singled out for punishment while others are allowed to basically do what they want. In the union CO. people were treated fairly and equally. |

There is a real place for unions, even today. Wages have been stagnant since 2000 (no one can blame this on unions because they have been in decline for decades). Corporate executives on average make more than 430 times as much as the folks working for them. Sure, healthcare is pretty much standard, but no one is looking out for the worker anymore. The actual workweek has gotten longer for the American household since the second World War. Once upon a time, the wife didn't work. Now in middle class families, the husband and the wife work a full work week just to make ends meet. That is an increase from 40 to 80 hours a week a household.
There is problems left with today's workplace. That being said, while I would love for most workers to unionize, it really depends on your workplace whether or not you should join. Are the union dues high enough to turn you off? If not, join the resurgence of unions, so that America's wages will return to the rise, rather than sinking further. |

Ideally they are good, but between corruption within and the inability of many to actually do anything, (because of the "right to work" causes some states have) their usefulness can be pretty questionable now.
And I'd rather have a Unicorn then a union. ;) |

Unions seem appropriate for some industries, and useless in others. If the workers feel abused, unions are needed. If everybody is happy, why have unions, although it might be the unions that are keeping everyone happy. |

Unions are good to have for the people in the unions.
I think this question is dumb in certain ways. In other ways it might be dumb too. |
