Kind of, but I feel bad for all the families that depend on them so NO.

our country calls itself capitalist, but we all know it's not true. in my honest opinion, i don't think capitalism is the way to go anyways, so yes, we should bail them out, with conditions to the executives. the focus needs to be more on the towns who rely on this business than the executives that are receiving bogus bonuses. there are a lot of towns that will go straight down the tubes if the big three AREN'T bailed out

Allowed to fail? They have caused their own failure. I would be more than glad to see them get themselves out of it, but too many people are making too much big money.
I don't think they should be rewarded for greed. Personally, I would like to see the unions lose their power. We have outlived their usefulness.

If the congress had told GM years ago that they were heading for disaster, do you think they would have listened ? The management AND the unions are completely out of touch with reality. The UAW has created a monster that must be fed. The management has created a black-hole bureaucracy that insures that nothing gets accomplished.
The failure is a self-inflicted, self-fulfilling dogma. If students aren't allowed to fail, there's no incentive to learn. If the government rewards failure with tax-payer money, there's no incentive to pay taxes. GM has run a negative net worth for the past 4 years. Their predicament should come as a surprise to no one.
We have exported capitalism and imported socialism. This government would offer life support to Tyranasaurus Rex, with the justification that "he's just to big to fail."

Sure.

What I don't understand is a lot of the US automakers build in Mexico and other contries. So what do they do, shut down US plants!

They also have been making poor cars for years and now it is catching up with them. Look at the facts that nearly every US car has poor to very poor reliability. Support the us maker that purposley makes cars to fail in order to make even more money with high priced service? Um no.

Plus, the United Auto Workers union was asked to have their members lower salaries. Why, when you have upper management making MILLIONS!!! If they cut one of the VP's salaries in 1/2 (so he'd probably only make 7.5 million), how many workers would be able to be paid?

They showed their true colors when they arrived in their own private jets wasting tons of cash just to show how important they are. OH look at me, i'm way too important to fly on a public plan.

I think they should get nothing. Its just the easy way out and if they cut production or loose out, its their own fault.

If i bought one of their cars and was laid off and couldn't make my payments, they'd repo it from me in a heart beat. Well, they can't pay the bills so away goes your business like anyone else.

jerks.

Bo
yes. if they go bankrupt they can get rid of the union and start from scratch. many companies that file bankruptcy and start over often strive. of course, if they don't curb their CEO's spending they'll be back where they were before.

Eric C
Nope, too much at stake in the economy to let them tank.

El Chimpancé Caliente
NO.

They need a crutch (the bridge loans)

But First, they need to RESET THE BONE AND APPLY A CAST (break the union and bad corporate governance, then apply rules of a structured bankruptcy).

A Chapter 7 (Gunshot to the head) is not a viable reaction or solution.

PS. I agree with the Tesla comment, and Tesla should be backed and funded considerably. However, It would take to long to tool up the company to get out the volume needed for consumer demand. Plus what about all the existing "Big 3" cars that need parts? Who will back existing warranties? There are just to many negative ramifications, to many to list, if they are allowed to fail. The negative synergy created would be devastating.

The Dread Pirate Roberts
Ask this question of the Unions, they caused it. Toyota sold 3.7 million cars and made money...GM sold 3.7 million cars and lost money. KISS Keep It Simple Stupid.

Hows this...
The government should anounce they will bail out 2 of the big three... the first one to fail is on their own, the other 2 get the help. Would this not make the auto makers pinch ewvery penny to ensure they ar enot the first to fail???
