How do you define worth?
Is a 4 carat diamond "worth" a fortune? Why?
Is a fur coat worth thousands of dollars? Why?
Is a great pitcher in the majors WORTH a few million dollars a year? How about a great basketball player; heck, AVERAGE b-ball players in the NBA make $2M per year!
While there is certainly abuse, a group known as the executive board hires a CEO at a price they deem worthy. They seem to think that bringning on a certain person with the right skills will be more valuable than millions in cash. If a person creates a company and runs it well, providing jobs and services to millions, I think he or she should get paid as much as a pro sports player.
Several financial magazines report on CEO pay and performance each year and investors have taken notice. People don't want to invest in a company that is throwing money down a rat hole; they want a CEO worth the money.
So some CEOs are worth it and some aren't. Just like some MLB pitchers. But take a look at Apple and tell me Steve Jobs ISN'T worth all the money they can throw at him. |

Absolutely not, but in all fairness if they are the founding CEO then they are the one with the original dream (and the drive to carry it thru). So they deserve to be rewarded for that ambition. Plus they have to keep the company profitable and afloat so the workers get a paycheck on payday. So that sort of drive impresses me.
But even when you keep that in mind, many of them are still much too greedy, youre right. |

no, the people who get paid the small amounts do all the work.
they are just the "chosen ones" who get to fart around. |

No answer seems to understand your question because nobody here knows a corporate executive or sees one at work.
That is the problem, when you don't see him or her, then you can guess that they may be up to no good.
You only know what you see, which is usually your boss...and nobody goes beyond that, not even the boss.
These executives meet in secret, conive among the board of directors, and fatter themselves up with pay packages and stock options.
Some answers here were generous in saying that some executives are worth it.
How do you know, and how do you know which ones?
Unless you know of them personally, you shouldn't make assumptions.
These guys plot to get rid of workers. Period.
One question thrown out tonight is..."Should I get a crappy job or go back to school?"
Guess who made that job "crappy".
YOU GUESSED IT! By CRACKIE! |

Your question is far too broad to make a reasonable answer. If you asked whether some exec's are worth millions, the answer would have to be yes. But to make it an inclusive question than you have to say no, but are discounting the many that are worth their salary.
One responder said that a person can't answer the question unless they know an Exec or have seen them work. Well, I disagree. You don't have to know one or see with your own eyes their work, many are Exec's of public companies and you can find out all that you need to know through many sources.
A CEO's main responsibility is to return profits to its shareholders. Many of us that are not Exec's want the CEO to work for us, but the facts are they don't. They work for those that financially support the business. If the CEO is making the shareholders money, then they are doing their job. And as a result, are rewarded with salary, bonuses, etc.
Like a Pro athlete, a CEO/Exec is paid for what they bring to the owners. MONEY! |

Just happens to be my pet peeve.
They are way frikken over paid.
That said, and my sour grapes obvious now, one gentleman mentioned the travesty that stuck out most to me: getting egregious sums for leading companies to and through mediocrity, or worse. The pay used to be for performance. Now it's kind of like a given, you're an exec, you get a fat check. I've seen a few work too, and don't get me wrong, some are great, some lousy, but on the average the ones I've seen don't work a heck of a lot harder that us average joes!!!

Most definately not. They wouldn't have made their millions if it weren't for the people who work for them. Good on them for having a dream and making that dream a reality. But the truth of their success is through others who do the majority of their work for them. |

No and then they think that's not enough and they steal some more.
And when that't not enough, they lay people off, move jobs out of the country and cut employee pensions and benefits so they can further pad their purses. |

There is nothing that anyone can say that will convince me that CEO's are worth the ridiculous amounts they are being paid. All the while they are screaming to "cut the bottom line so the company can remain competitive!". Translation: NO INCREASE IN PAY FOR ANYONE ELSE!! |

Most of these folks make their money by taking a risk that they can increase the stock price; so they get a reward if it happens while they are in charge.
Imagine sitting in an office considering a decision that could impact thousands of lives...a lonely place indeed. |
