People seem to have so many problems with royal mail wouldn't it be great if someone like DHL, parcelforce or fedex had a large mail infrastructure and you could easily chose which carrier to use? I'd love to see different coloured postboxes everywhere and have a real choice of which company to use. Do you think this could ever happen?

Ha ha, get to the shetlands by morning, that'll be a miracle!!! yes I agree the best thing would be for the royal mail to get better, it should be a public service I think and not be run like a company focused on profit. |

The types of private commercial companies you mention just want to cherry pick the more profitable kind of mail they deal with and deliver.
We forget an advantage of the Royal Mail in that it has given us flat rate postage prices for delivery anywhere in the UK. Do you think DHL etc. would deliver a single fiddly little postcard from Scilly to the Shetlands for 24p? |

yes i think this would be a good idea!
i was only thinking about this last week when a bloke from royal mail was talking on the local radio saying about their 'competition', i was thinking it can't be that bad as they're the only ones with postboxes for use to use!
it would be great if another company were able to put postboxes everywhere, ie DHL could have yellow ones at the side of all royal mail's red ones, then we could choose which to use. the competition would make both companies (especially royal mail) work harder and lower prices in order to get our custom.
not sure how day to day delivery would work, suppose both companies would have to do a round, or get a contractor to deliver both lots of mail. |

I agree with the principle but the problem is there are many area that are loss making and the private companies would simply choose to not deliver to these areas. |

No, this is one of a few public services that should be, well, a public service, like the police or army. We shouldn't begrudge paying less than the price of a Kitkat to get someone to collect a packet from a box down our road and get it to a house in the Shetlands by the morning. And the post office should think of themselves as a public service and not employ unreliable staff who can't speak English. I've no connection with the post office but I use them a lot and I'm fed up with late deliveries and having stuff pinched. The Royal Mail should be something we can rely on and be proud of, it's about time the government, post office managers and the unions stopped fighting and got on with the job. If that's too old fashioned for the treasury, then I guess we'll end up with different coloured postboxes in key collection areas; frankly I'm surprised that EBay haven't cottoned on to this already.

yes i think they should have had enough of royal mail there a joke at the min trying a new service at christmas what a stupid thing to do the person who thought of this should be fired hes caused alot of problems for people and companys a lot of expence with refunds |
