The chain is helping accelerate the loss of American jobs to low-wage countries such as China. Wal-Mart, which in the late 1980s and early 1990s trumpeted its claim to "Buy American," has doubled its imports from China in the past five years alone, buying some $12 billion in merchandise in 2002. That's nearly 10% of all Chinese exports to the United States.

A new Wal-Mart destroys jobs by putting local merchants out of business. The jobs Wal-Mart creates are fewer, lower-paying and mostly part-time.

Most jobs at Wal-Mart have little or no health benefits. Wal-Mart encourages its workers to seek public assistance for their health care. In Georgia, 10,000 children of Wal-Mart employees were enrolled in the public health insurance program.

The average hourly worker makes just $18,000 dollars a year. Meanwhile, in 2002, the corporation raked in $6.6 billion in profits. Wal-Mart has known for years that many of its stores violate child labor laws and state regulations requiring work breaks - but has done little, if anything, to stop it.

The federal government charged Wal-Mart with violating the Clean Water Act in 17 locations across the country. Run-off from Wal-Mart construction sites polluted drinking water, streams and lakes. To settle the charges Wal-Mart agreed to pay a $1 million dollar fine.

I am not sure how our opinions are appropriate to be cited in a speech, since we are not expert economists or consumer watchdogs, but . . . .

I think this question is way too broad and complicated. I watched the PBS Frontline special on this very question and it all depends on how you are personally impacted.

Wal-Mart has undeniably helped keep inflation down and has created different jobs in a global economy. But it also takes away jobs - local merchants who can't compete and even has altered the manufacturer/retailer relationship to the demise of some retailers. What happened to Rubbermaid was very interesting and sad.

I am a college professor and some of my colleagues are so anti-Walmart you would swear it is Satan's dreamchild.

I have come to my own conclusion and that is that Wal-Mart has hurt America enough for me to limit the $$$ I spend there, but no so much that I am going to completely boycott it. Until I see more evidence (and not from those with agenda either way) one way or the other, I think the question is too complex.

Good luck on your speech - and again you would have had to clear this with me in advance if I was your instructor before you cite Yahoo Answer respondents as legitimate sources.
