It's been going on for a few years now - and it's a quite brilliant piece of marketing strategy as the company's colours are somewhat Christmassy.

I'm not a big fan of it, but I don't think its sole purpose in life is to drive the mom-and-pop stores out of business. It can do what it does because it can get away with it. You have two main methods for making a profit: sell a few items with a high profit margin, or sell a boatload of stuff on smaller margins. They are clearly in the latter category.
However, based on what they did with some big towns like New York and Chicago, they are sometimes willing to play ball. Chicago's a big union town, but Wal-Mart agreed begrudgingly to pay their workers at least $7.50 per hour there and offer health insurance. But bear in mind, if your town rejects Wal-Mart, the town next door to you could welcome them with open arms, and your mom-and-pop businesses are still gone.
If people really want to stop Wal-Mart, they have to stop shopping there. Just like tabloids: the paparazzi crap will go away when we stop watching the sleaze shows and buying the rag newspapers. |

I don't know about any books or articles, maybe check union websites as most hate walmart. They definately effect small town businesses. We have had several businesses close due to walmart. One example, was the sports card shop my husband worked for when he was teenager. Walmart came in and had tons of cards and supplies. Once the place he worked for closed, walmart quit selling most of their sports card related items. |

Walmart is evil. Some municipalities will not even allow them to open a store within their boundaries because they know that they are harmful to the local economy.
They also expect wholesalers to give them a better price for their goods than every other retailer. |

YES! because places like a small mart at a gas station or a little shoppett. it's a very big economic problem to the small town stores. |

you can look at it in two ways, it does hurt a small town due to we live in rual areas which means you drive alot if your town doesn't carry it and if they do you pay about 25 to 30 % Higher for it b/c they know you don't want to drive so far and if walmart does move in then the small town business cant compete with there prices they buy everything in great mass of bulk that the ycan offer lower prices so yes it would put alot of mam and pa shop out but for employment factor would be awesome. |

Of course. When a Wal-Mart moves into town, the small businesses, known as Mom and Pop stores, are being shut down simply because they cannot compete with Wal-Mart's super low prices. The only positive contribution Wal-Mart has made to America was boosting our productivity in our economy. They don't offer health, dental, life insurance to their low paid employees who can't afford them anyway. The only people who benefits from Wal-Mart are the consumers because of the low prices. You can check out Greg Spotts' "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price" book to help you with your paper. Good luck! |

No, I think its a good thing we have a Walmart. Now we are going to have two of them. We really dont have any good small town businesses here that really never competed with Walmart.SORRY |

just like any other situation, you just cannot please everybody. I am saying these because definitely, Walmart is a big help to the towns employment situation but also with it's entry, small competitors are surely to be hit.
So, I guess the best way to decide is to see which scenario would be the best for the town... a) sacrifie small businesses but increase employment rate or b) sacrifice employment rate and keep the small businesses alive. The town should look into the numbers to determine the answer. |
