If you use algebra on a daily bases, what type of work do you do? It seems many feel this math is really for a select few. Let me know your opinion on this matter.

IMHO, algebra is used in almost every single aspect of life - the simplest formulas are used in jobs like as a cashier, a bank teller, etc. and the most complex ones used in the field of finance like accounting, trading, etc. the funnest part of it is that you can even use it for gambling - calculating probabilities in casinos, sports, etc. the richest people in the world (Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, etc.) use algebra as a basic tool in wealth building. it's like their pencil to make money. (btw, i'm a trader in the market). |

Since even so-called basic math is really algebra (just that the unknowns are usually not designated by letters but by the full names of the unknowns) everytime you make change, work with a recipe, or figure out how many board feet of lumber you need, you are using algebra. For instance; if I wish to know the amount of tax on an item when the tax rate is 8% and the item costs $10 I can phrase its as "What is the amount of tax on $10 at 8%, or I can write it as X = $10 x .08 where X = amount of tax. Either way it is still an algebra calculation.
So the answer to your question is everyone uses algebra every day no matter what their line of work. |

I do every day. I am a manager for and adult novelty store. I use it for P&L purposes, inventory, and much more. When the register breaks i use it to find out how much to add for tax. Honestly, i use it all the time. Bank acct, gas mileage, and etc. |
