Does Anyone Actually Boycott Wal-Mart?
I am just like many others. I bytch about Wal-Mart for one reason or another, but I continue to shop there.
One reason is because I live in a small town and they are the biggest store and can offer an affordable price. A catch 22.
So does anyone and/or can anyone refuse to shop there?

I don't totally refuse. But I will try my best to go out of the way and find another store even I have to pay a few extra $'s. I.E. I go to Baby'sRUS instead. Besides, gifts are like revolving doors. Everything seems to come from walmart now. I want to be different.

Yes anyone can if they so choose. Having done research on various companies Wall Mart stands out as being particularly ruthless with regards to employees pay and benefits. I prefer to pay more to support mom and pop businesses.

I think every American should refuse to shop at Walmart until they raise wages of their workers. I'm not asking pay raises so they can live like kings. I'm asking a few more dollars an hour above min wage, so people can afford to live. People are pitiful, and it's sad to see folks working as serfs to a greedy corporation.

Something I found on a website:

Largest U.S. retailer
3,300 stores in the U.S.
$218 billion in sales in 2002
Largest grocer

$80 billion in 2001, 10 percent of the market
Largest U.S. employer

962,000 U.S. workers
Smallest wages in industry

Wal-Mart pays $2-3 an hour less than UFCW-represented retail stores
Smallest benefits in industry

Employee health care plan requires workers to pay nearly half the company’s costs
Fewer than two out of five employees participate in Wal-Mart’s health care plan
Wal-Mart as a job destroyer

For every two jobs created by Wal-Mart, a community loses three
And Largest Union Buster

Twice persuaded Arkansas judges to issue nationwide injunctions to keep union information out of employees’ hands
Cited by NLRB with 40 unfair labor practice complaints covering hundreds of allegations in less than one year
Faces class action suit over discrimination against women in hiring, promotions, assignments, training, pay and retaliation

I won't shop there. Haven't been there in almost a year. I prefer Target anyday.

My family doesn't shop at ANY Big-Box-Marts out of principle.

If we can't find Product X anywhere except these stores, we manage fine doing without.

Americans used to be known for their ingenuity and resourcefulness and their ability to make do without, but we have been seduced by materialism.

Congratulations to anyone that says no more Walmart!!!

I will not shop at Wal-Mart because it is basically an extension of communist Chinese Party bosses subjugating slave labor for their own profit. Virtually everything in Wal-Mart is Chinese, and with that comes the shoddy quality, poisonous ingredients and lead in the paint. If you want to throw away your money on cheap garbage that falls apart, put Americans out of work and poison your family, then continue to shop at Wal-Mart. I won't do it.

There is more to things than the cheapest possible price, and you have not learned that yet.

I will never shop at a Wal-Mart. I would drive out of my way to find a store, like Target, to shop at. However, I understand how Wal-Mart works. They are built in small towns because there is NO big competition, right? Well, in every town there are mom and pop places that have been there for a few decades. I would suggest that if you must shop at Wal-Mart because you live in a small town, try to frequent the smaller, more expensive shops every once in a while; at least to keep the American dream alive.

I don't shop at walmart, yeah they could save me alot of money but it's not worth dealing with the crowds, the irritating customer base, the rude employees or the unsanitary conditions (The three I've been in have just been gross.)

I don't neccessarily go out of my way to visit "mom and pop" shops either. I have no problem with giant mega-corps or free enterprise, my only beef is with Walmart. :)

Yes, In Waxhaw/ Weddington, North Carolina they are having a very big dispute with Wal-mart being built in a very high class neighborhood. They have been fighting this dispute for almost 7 years now. My father is a member of the board and he recommends the people of weddington and waxhaw to boycott Wal-mart. Many people actually do. In fact have of the county doesn't shop at Wal-Mart.

Olivier W
A lot of people boycott Wal-Mart in New York.

Oh wait, there isn't any Wal-Mart in New York ...

Aaron H
they can, but most people don't

kristen

I don't like what Walmart can do to a town - however I have no real reason to shop there. I don't have one directly near me and wouldn't make an effort to head there unless I was forced to - I suppose if my options were limited I'd be saying something differently - it's hurt a lot of people - and in some ways helped some - personally I prefer my super market, Mall and Target.

I love Walmart.

Why pay more $$$ for the exact same thing at a fancy store?

~Plus at WM you can check yourself out!~
No more waiting in line behind someone with 100 items who has no idea she is going to pay with a check until the very last item is bagged and the clerk tells her the amount, then with a look of surprise on her face she finally start digging in her 3 foot deep and wide purse for her checkbook, while you wait with 3 items!

Plus, I can shop any time of the day or night that I want to, and IT IS ALL ABOUT ME!

I buy alot online too, for the same exact reasons.

People forget that these little Mom & Pop stores often charge double the price BECAUSE they are the only game in town. There is little variety and only the most common items are featured. I can go to WM and get a soundcard for my pc, organic blood meal for my garden, and DaVinci Syrup for my coffee. Now what do Mom & Pop have to say about that? HUH? What's a sound card? What's Blood meal? Heck, what's organic? Syrup, isnt that for waffles?

Give me a break. People don't like Walmart because they make the most money. Period.

btw: My dad owned and operated his small electrical store for 50 years before he retired at 62 just a few years ago. Walmart couldn't touch him because he offered items they couldn't offer, like a great knowledge base and older replacement items/styles for older technology. Oh yeah, his prices were cheaper than Walmarts, too.

Long live Walmart!

Oh yeah it is quite common for companies to pay women less, hire illegals and discriminate against minorites. It happens all the time everywhere, it is NOT exclusive to Walmart. It happens in Hospitals, it happens in the government, it happens in plants.

Love your Big Boy avatar, sure do miss that chain's Hot fudge cake and Big Boy special sauce!

Quant
Many talk about boycotting, but as you note it is very difficult. I have read Wal-Mart saves the average family over $2,000 year and I believe it. They are trying to stop a super center from going in near me. I understand, but I hope the effort fails. With gas prices so high, we can walk to Wal-Mart and save even more.

No.. I live on Wal-Mart.. it's funny you should post this question because I just seen an episode of South Park the other night about this.. funny as hell.
