Alex N | Does Wal-Mart sell inferior quality products under the same name brand? |
I am curious because some circulate rumors that for example the same oil that you buy at Wal-Mart for your car is worse of a quality than at a car-parts store because suppliers cut quality in order to meet Wal-Mart super low purchase costs. |

Not really, other than those products that have been recalled that are made in China.. Most of Walmarts products are from China.. That's why they are able to pass it on to us at cheap prices.. |

Oils have an SAE (Society of Automobile Engineers) and API (American Petroleum Institute) ratings. If a rating is listed on the can then the contents must be equal to or exceed the ''stated'' rating, that is law.
API rates oil based on its quality rather than its viscosity, using such factors as longevity, cleanliness, and hardiness in different temperatures and under different pressures. Consequently, API's ratings are somewhat more dynamic than SAE's and its standards change nearly every year. Ratings are denoted alphabetically — SA, SB, SC, SD, etc. Oil currently falls in the SL range.

It's possible... But is there really a way to find out?
NOT REALLY. |

Those that say yes to this question, have no idea which way is up. Use common sense, no name brand company is going to cheapen the quality just to be sold at Wal Mart.
Wal Mart can sell cheaper by sheer quanity.
Also, those that keep the rhetoric about chinese goods, obviously haven't been looking at labels in other stores, as about all merchants today have their shelves full of Chinese crap, but at a higher price for the same product. |

I can't imagine this being true because they would only be hurting their brand. For example, if you purchased Penzoil from Wal-Mart and in turned out to be crap, would you be likely to head down to the local auto parts store and buy Penzoil? No, you would be more likely to buy Quakerstate, Valvoline, or some other brand.
EDIT: I would add that these retailers often sell no name brands or store brands for many items just because they are cheaper than the brand names.
With regard to brand names, what I have often heard about Wal-Mart is they will require suppliers to provide special packaging and/or sizes which fit more closely with their marketing. But if you buy a brand name product, it's likely to be identical to the same product purchased at Target, K-Mart, Walgreens, or some other retailer. |

I know for a fact they sell inferior produce. Where I live there are 3 levels of produce. The first level is the high quality stuff, the second is average quaility, and the third is the poorest quaility. Wal-Mart only buys level 3 produce.
I know this because I know a few people in the produce industry here in my town. Distrubitors and produce managers all know this for a fact. |

No, it all comes from the same place. I used to ship out some of the crap Wally World gets. |

Yes.
I know that some of the supplements they used to sell were slightly "cheaper" formulas than you would buy at a health or drug store. At least it was like that a few years ago. |

Legally they are not going to sell you products with a brand name and it be poorer quality. All retailers get the same products thats why you sometimes see Best buy stickers on DVDs at wal-mart. You are talking about quality and those name brands are not going to risk there reputation. Wal-mart just doesn't make a few more pennies as the rest of the retailer industry. They drop their profit margin on each item but end up selling to more people because of the price difference of $19.74 instead of $19.99. |

It wouldn't surprise me at all. Wal-mart is a notoriously difficult company to supply, and I would understand a supplier cutting corners in order to produce a product at a price that wal-mart would be willing to pay.
I don't undestand how a company with such cut-throat policies succeeds. If you supply to wal-mart you have to be gratefull for the contract they give even though your profit margin is cut to a minimum, and you get fined if your delivery is a day late.
As a customer you get followed around by undercover "security" and when you've spent your $200 you're asked to produce your bill before you leave, just like a common shoplifter. |

I read an article a while back in the NYT that Sony is producing a cheaper line of TVs for Walmart and some other discount retailers.
If the product is cheaper would that mean its made with inferior parts as compared to the tvs and electronics sold else where? I don't know but it would be my best guess.
Maybe the same thing's happening across the line? |

You got it right.
Suppliers cut quality in order to meet Wal-Mart super low purchase costs.
Keep buying crap at wal-mart. The chineese need that money. |
