Does Walmart help or hurt the economy?
sure they offer cheap products and lots of jobs, but the put a lot of other companies out of business and have questionable business practices. I hear they are boycotted in a lot of small markets and they destroy all attempts at unionization.

Well they employ a lot of people and they have really good prices. So that is how they help.

But I think they do more harm than good.

They have a monopoly in all things retail and it makes it hard for other people to compete. Which causes other stores(especially "mom and pop" stores) to go out of business.

They are always trying to get musicians to give them access to songs that are only available through them and make these artists censor their music.

They don't have a union. They have been caught employing illegal workers. They have been accused of not giving employees breaks and proper time off.

All this from the biggest retail store in the world. What makes me mad is that they can TOTALLY afford to do a lot of great things for their employees and community and THEY DON'T!

That is why I chose to NOT shop there.

Well WM is good at creating profits for shareholders. Everyone and everything else is not of concern to them. They even bought land here, that was zoned environmental preservation, and fought the government 5 years to try and make it commercial, since its close to two growing communities.

I don't shop there, because I dont support their Made in China approach to products.

Walmart started out with the slogan "Buy American" which they claimed to sell nothing but American products. Now as the country was sucked in to this phoney line they sell nothing but products made in other countries. Yes I think they hurt the economy. No cashier or stocker is making above min wage they work little hours to keep them from getting benifits & they are like a monopoly. I have not bought anything from Walmart in over 2 years. I think they are bad for this country & they really are not that much cheaper price wise anymore than any other chain.

They care about one person, theirselves! Small town way of life? Give me a break! I get a kick out of the people that have a bumper sticker on one side that says... "U.A.W. Local Union" The other bumper sticker says "Bring it home to the U.S.A." With a wal mart happy face on it.... Whats wrong with this picture? Kepp shopping there folks, after all, they may be our next employer! Maybe we can raise a family on those wages! ...Right!

This is the world of business.

Like any other business, it depends on how it affects you. Many people hate Wal-Mart for the reasons you note, but others love Wal-Mart for the reasons you note.
Yes, they can put other companies out of business, but it's debatable whether that is mainly because of Wal-Mart's business practices or the fact that the other companies are inefficiently or poorly run. Wal-Mart does put pressure on other companies to become more efficient and lower their prices or lose customers to Wal-Mart. That is not a bad thing.
However, I know some people that used to work for Wal-Mart and I heard a lot about questionable employment practices, some of which Wal-Mart has acknowledged and supposedly changed.
As for being anti-union, Wal-Mart is not the only company that is trying to keep unions out. There are a lot of companies that have folded over the past few years because the unions got footholds in them and their labor costs skyrocketed.

they are no better than any other store they have all turned our farm land and other areas to be stores on just about every corner in th U.S so Wal-mart shouldn't have to take all the blame .

Wal-Mart helps the economy by creating jobs. As much as the paid lobbists try to put negative spin on a new Wal-Mart opening, the fact that 1000 people will apply for 300 positions at a new Wal-Mart tells you that Wal-Mart provides jobs that people want.

Low prices do help people. Remember, this is a free country. People are free NOT to work or shop there. If so many people in an area shop there that it puts other stores out of business isn't their right to do so. Don't consumers have the right to shop where they choose. I agree that Walmart can afford to keep prices low and offer store employees better wages. I say "store employees" because their truck drivers are amongst the best paid drivers in the country. I know because I'm married to one.

Working for Walmart has ruined my health and accepting that job in November of 2010 has ended my career. They do nothing for the hard working employees, only scared of lying, stealing and crappy employees!

The produce department at thier Country Club Hills, Illinois store has mold growing all over the fruits and veggies. Also, if this store has passed an inspection by the Agricultural Department, I think us tax payers are being had. Walmart must pay them off.
