| Does a 3 percent drop in US auto sales really justify laying off 15 % of the workforce? |
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071101/ap_on_bi_ge/chrysler_job_cuts Additional Details From the article: "Chrysler became a private company in August when DaimlerChrysler AG, now called Daimler AG, sold 80.1 percent of Chrysler to the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP." |

to me, yes and no. people do have their own needs, but to some, their needs is a gold plated shark tank... |

If it no longer makes financial sense to pay that 15% of the workforce and cutting that expense restores profitability, by all means yes.
Companies don't owe you a career. They owe you payment for work performed.
Suppose an employee said "inflation has made my pay worth 3% less. I can't afford to work for you anymore." Would you accuse the employee of disloyalty?
I agree it sucks for the 15%, but the company isn't doing anything wrong. |

It does if Chrysler cannot sustain the workforce and turn a profit for its stockholders.
Chrysler has been two steps from bankruptcy for decades. Why should they have to justify cutting costs? |

Yes - since those layoffs are, i'm assuming, being carried out by American automakers. I would argue that this is the realization of what we've all known for years, that if GM, Ford and Chrysler don't shape up they're in for some serious rough waters. I this is an excellent question! that needs some serious attention by government, and industry makers.
Is part of the problem though that the North American car makers are forced to pay such high prices for labor, taxes, etc? |

When your paying for your employees entire healthcare (what company other then auto works does) and your paying them up to $60-$80 an hour, yes.
If the unions would allow for their union workers to pick up some of the healthcare expense like the rest of americans with their jobs, they might save a bunch of jobs.
Healthcare cost is killing the American auto companies! |

yes it does those union workers get paid big bucks to make cars thats why they are so expensive .those lazy auto workers get paid huge bucks to do hardly anything i worked in a ford plant here in virginia that got shut down we where contractors makeing great money we where working our butts off we where the only ones working in that plant they guy sweeping the floors in there was makeing more money then we where he was getting around 25 bucks a hour 3 weeks paid vacation and sick leave and the union was fighting the company for more and who pays for it you when you buy a car if any of those guys where getting paid for how much work they done they would all be broke. i get great benifits where i work but i work for them i dont pay a union to tell the company i need more i work for it simple as that |

Yes, if they're preventing them from being competitive. |

And don't give me that "Buy made in the US crap" either. Until any US auto worker can squarely say that they never buy "Made in China" products, they will hold a double typical standard. I am sick of having to pay those union workers top dollar and health insurance for a product that is totally sub par to other manufacturers products. Until US auto makers build economic, reliable, environmentally friendly vehicles they will never see a penny from my pocket book...What goes around, comes around... |

When does any American enterprise need justification for a layoff??? |
|

poopsie
|
probably, every one else is getting laying off, especially in real estate, no body is making enough sales, I think bill gates should bail out his country. and help families here, instead of all over the world |

From a business standpoint - yes. Profits must be high and expenses must be low.
Staff wages are almost always one of the top hurts on businesses worldwide. Cutting expenses due to lower revenue actually does make sense.
From a moral standpoint - no...many people have lost their jobs. |
