prettyme25y | Does any one know why wal-mart is so successful business wise. Like what about them stands out from the rest? |
I basically trying to find out what makes wal-mart a leading business and is it a leading business. |

Don't they import stuff from China. If so that is an unfair advantage |

I know from dealing with Wal-Mart personally as a vendor that they are b#st#rds when it comes to stealing other people's business ideas. Also, because they have gotten so big, when they open up a store in a new area, they basically lower their prices (at a loss) until they hurt the competition. Then, when they are the only game in town-they jack up the prices and in many cases are higher than anyone was before. That is what they do in more rural areas which is why there are so many Wal-Marts in the "Red States". In more urban areas Wal-Mart is not so successful because wise consumers realize that they are truly hurting the economy by putting hard working small business owners in difficult positions. But hey, what do I know... |

Wal-Mart is successful because of it's size and efficiency of its distribution system, our methods cannot be paralelled simply because nobody else has a company this size. If you go into a back room of a wal-mart you will realize how little inventory the store actually carries that is not on the shelf. The typical store's stockroom accounts for approximately 5% of the store's square footage. We provide lower prices because we can purchase an item cheaper than a competitor, because of the quantity we purchase, and we can get it from point A to point B for the least amount of money(in terms of transportation cost) |

It is, although not in the way it once way. Wal-Mart became successful on the basis of its excellent distribution system at a time when many companies were using a centralized warehouse. Wal-Mart emphasized using multiple warehouses and a sophisticated system of inventory control and tracking to ensure appropriate stock levels were maintained without carrying too much inventory (inventory = $$.)
In recent years, the company has been plagued by criticism and severla high-profile lawsuits which focused on their employment practices (not paying employees for hours worked, not paying OT when required, sexual harassment) as well as their labor practices (employing third-world sweatshops and/or child labor to produce many of the items they sell at such low prices.)
They are still an industry leader, but they are not as dominant as they were 10 or 12 years ago. |

Walmart is like that playground bully you never liked.
Basically they are not unionized so they offer their employees minimum wage, do not pay fo over-time, and offer no benefits to their employees. They hire kids fresh into highschool so they can scam and wrok them for cheap.
If a mention of union happens they shut down and open up two blocks away with new employees, new comers, and desperate teens who don't know the sham. My union has seen this so man times it sound crazy but is true.
Also they import everything from China, India and other countries with sweat shops so they can pay little amounts of foreign dollars for huge foreign labour and prodcuts to produce goods that ar e then sold to us reasonably, while still allowing them to make profit.
It might sound liek a good strategy but they take business away from independent local business that might specialize in lamps for example, because they have a whole two aisles of imported cheap lamps that look dandy, and cost 5 or 10 dollars less. At the end of the day it comes down to morals. It's better to support a Candian retail business like the Real Canadian Superstore, or Giant Tiger |
