wendyshannon | Does anyone here hate shopping at Wal-Mart and why? |
I am a newlywed and have found myself in the position to need to shop at Wal-Mart because of their low prices. Trust me, I hate everything they stand for and would rather stand by the individual stores any day. But, the problem is, though I want to stand by my principles, I also want to eat! Wal-Mart prices astound me! I had never truly looked at the prices of things and compared them until I got married. It is the worst place in the world to be, though. I hate the crowds, the staff is never to be found and you have to wait in line forever, as well as bag your own groceries (or at least be certain they are all in your cart and not stuck on the turn table). I am ashamed to shop there but feel it is the only option for us until I finish school and we get out of debt. Does anyone else feel this way? Perhaps this is more of a vent than a question.I just spent two hours there - 45 minutes were in line and the bag with our orange juice never made it into the cart but is on the receipt! |

I wish they would have more cashiers available. I refuse to use the self serve checkout lanes they have recently installed. If I'm not on the payroll, I'm not doing their job for them.
Anyway, I generally don't mind shopping there. I have a goal to pay off my student loans and be completely debt free within 2 years. It doesn't make sense to pay more for the same items. That means smart shopping so I compare prices and go where I get the best deal. Often, the sale price at a grocery store is cheaper than Walmart.
However, Wal-Mart is almost always cheaper on basic, non-sale items. A couple of recent examples:
6 pk of individual OJ containers:
$3.34 at Wal-Mart, $3.75 at Kroger, $4.44 at Albertsons
12 pk of soft drinks:
$2.75 at Wal-Mart, $3.85 at Kroger
I can't afford to spend an extra dollar or so on every item on my grocery list so I go to Wal-mart. I've started shopping early in the morning on weekends before the crowds get there so I don't really run into that many customers.
A couple of other answerers commented on the type of people who shop at Wal-mart. I frequent all of the local grocery stores, Target, Wal-mart and others.....the customers are all the same where ever you go. It's winter---you will always run into someone with a cold or a bratty child running up and down the aisles. I used to manage an office supply store in a very affluent area and customers would allow their unattended children to race through the store on the office chairs and then get upset when we asked them to stop it. Income level doesn't always correlate to having class.
I would say that 45 minutes in line is too long though. It IS peak season though so the lines may be a little longer but 45 minutes is nuts.
Don't be ashamed to shop there. I would be more ashamed of not paying off my debt because I was wasting $20 - $40 per week by spending more for the exact items at another store. As far as how employees are treated, their wages and benefits are identical to what you will find at any other retailer. I worked for 3 different national chains over the years and they all had the same business model: 30% full time(which includes the management), 70% part time, starting wage $7.50 - $8.00, no benefits for part timers, expensive benefits for full timers, schedules that changed every week, varying number of hours from week to week, etc. Retail is a high turnover, low skilled industry so they don't invest much in their workforce. |

I hate shopping at Wal-mart worse then you.I was a wal-mart employee for over 15yrs and i quit because pardon me but...the wal-mart corpration sucks when ifirst working for wal mart it was a good place to work and shop their main option was customer service..I was in customer service i loved it until wal-mart got greedy.Wal-mart employees dont care about their customers anymore and wal-mart managers are awful its all about greed.Wal-mart think that they have been in business so long that they have brain washed the american public into thinkinf we cant do without them but guess what we can...Dollar General has competetive pricing and they are growing and popping up all over...JCPennys has better quality and better prices on most of their clothing now than good old Wal-Mart..What about the Dollar Tree and Big Lot you can get home supplies like cleaning products just as cheap there and Big Lot has the same toys as Wal-Mart and they are just about half the cost. I did not leave on bad terms as matter of fact the management team ask me to stay but i saw a trend coming in wal-marts future that i could not work with.I have not shopped at Wal-Mart in over a year now and I have saved money and you can too it just takes time to look around and shop around for the better prices and that is why Wal-Mart is doing so good everyone like the convience of a one stop shop .im kind of like you im venting but also ive been on both sides of the problem and being one the outside and looking in other companies like SearsK-Mart are tapping in on some of Wal-Marts secrets and Wal-Mart is forgetting that its people like you and I that makes them #1 in the retail market today. Wal_Mart doesnt practice it we wont be undersold policy anymore so they arent the cheapest place in town anymore.I just want you to know that I am with you and if you really want to let the corporation know how you feel honestly call 1 800 925 6278 someone will be there to recieve your complaint and maybe the more we complain the more they will get back to Sam Waltons idea of takeing care of business. Thanks for listening.. |

Wal-Mart is good for the average shopper in terms of prices, thats why it will never fall.
But if you want it to go away, just stop shopping there, but no one is willing to do that now, are they? |

Wal Mart is a decent place to shop and are NOT worse but not better than any other market or supermarket.

I make great money and 9.9 times out of 10 I do not shop at walmart. but I sometimes go to Walmart, because I want to keep that money in my pocket. so I go for specific things that I know will save me some dough.
What I hate about Walmart is the type of people who go. Usually I find them to be lower class and disgusting. There is always the sick person coughing or sneezing at will and wild kids running around without their leashes. You cannot escape the sound of screaming and crying children while there.
All I can think about when I brave the journey into this store is the amount of filth and germs these lower class people bring with them and how I can sterlize myself without contaminating my home. |

One of the problems is that people will get a job at walmart, work for only a few shifts and then quit because they can't handle the pressure. Lot of cashiers get alot of pressure because of the customers and the mangers. Everyone complains about the long lines. Do you stop and think why? The worst time to go shopping anywhere is before the holidays, day before and after a snow storm, and after the hoildays. The first weekend of the month people get paid, and the third of the month people get paid. It is all about timing.
I understand that you don't want to shop at walmart but any other store has the same problems, except that walmart sells things cheapier. Why paid a dollar more for an item when you could get the same item but less. Sorry that you didn't get good customer service. Try not to blame your cashier for having long lines, they have no control over it, always ask the cashier and make them show you that there is no more bags on the turn table before leaving. You might have a better shopping day than before. |
