Before anyone panics and withdraws their money, everyone should be reminded that, as of October 1, 2007, all of your deposits are protected up to £35,000 by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). For those familiar with the United States, the FSCS plays a similar role as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIS), which protects deposits in the United States up to $100,000. Since Barclays is a UK bank, the FSCS would apply.
Barclay's may be having some troubles, but your deposits are protected, and if the bank does fail (which is very unlikely), the government would most likely intervene and arrange for another bank to purchase Barclay's.
The UK government has a whole framework setup to prevent a failing bank from effecting consumers & the economy adversely. The October 2007 Banking Reform implements some changes that help protect consumers better.
So there is no need to have a run on the bank. Your money is protected one way or another. If you have more than £35,000 on deposit, however, you you should consider the fact that anything above £35,000 is not protected by the government. |

Not sure they are in trouble, but after the Northern Rock fiasco anything's possible. Shares in all financial institutions have been going up and down liken yo-yos lately. Understand customers of Abbey have had the same problem. Hope it gets sorted soon. |
