Samantha B | Does anyone think Labor Unions (namely the UAW) have contributed to the mess the auto industry is in? |
(I'm not anti-union, nor do I know much about how economies work, but I heard this from someone and it got me thinking) |

There is no short answer to this Q. When it comes to assigning blame, there's plenty to go around. To say the fault lies totally with the union is both simplistic and wrong.
Some blame can & should be assigned to government for allowing foreign makers such a large share of the domestic market and for over-regulation/over-taxation. Management also needs to take some heat for many things, such as parts proliferation, model interchangeability, or lack thereof, executive compensation and costs related to model introduction, re-tooling and short production runs of certain models.
The unions also have their share. When a lot of those union contracts were first adopted they included unsustainable promises like lifetime employment, no employee/retiree health care co-pays and pay for no work. Those features might have been OK when the ' big Three ' had a 70% market share. But now the 3 combined have barely a 40% share of the domestic market. So now mgmt. is trying to re-negotiate those contracts. I fear it's too little, too late.
That's the short version, i'm afraid. |

No. Everybody likes to blame the Unions but Management agreed to all these terms. What happen was Management figured out that benefits were cheaper than giving out pay raises every year. So back in the 70's and 80's they gave away the store in Health Benefits. Promised full insurance coverage for everyone including retirees. They didn't figure on Health Care cost to shoot through the roof. Now their stuck paying 100% insurance coverage on thousands of people. Management thought it was a great idea at the time because they got the same benefits as the Union works. GM has to tack on $6000 on every car just to pay for all these benefit packages they agreed to back 30 years ago. |

Yes, of course they have, but they've also done a lot of good for the auto-industry.
The entire industry is suffering (domestic and foreign) due to the economic situations. |

No they have not, while I don't agree with everything the UAW does we have taken pay cuts and benefit cuts to help the companies.Someone said the wages and benefits add $6000 to the price of a vehicle, not even close. He also said our insurance pays 100%,why do these people lie about our benefits?I would be nice if people that don't actually know what our pay and benefits are would keep their mouths shut. |

They probably can shoulder some of the blame for the crisis, but most of it lies on the shoulders of management who failed to properly plan for the oil crisis, even after weathering two before this, for failing to properly modernize, for failing...well, just for failing. |

I pretty much blame poor management (as another answer said, failing to adjust to changing market realities over the last 30 years). Like real estate investors recently, they thought they'd continue to grow forever.
Those who blame unions will focus on pensions. The huge pension liabilities stem from agreements made many years ago, when neither side realized what would happen - decreasing sales, less stable environment etc.
Besides, both unions and management have the responsibility to get the best deal they can for those they represent - employees and shareholders, respectively. If the unions get too much, it's not their fault, but management's for agreeing to it. |

NO, if it were not for the unions, workers would still be working for ten cents a day and work twelve hours and receive no benefits. |
