barry l | Does it matter economically that the UK does not have its own car industry anymore? |
To clarify: MG Rover was the last wholly British owned volume car manufacturer before its closure in 2005. Yet I believe the UK is still the 3rd or 4th biggest car producing manufacturer in the EU, with significant production plants across the UK from Nissan, Toyota, BMW and Vauxhall.
Is the contribution to UK's GDP and the general financial benefit to the economy any less because these plants are owned by overseas companies?
I can understand that their commitment and loyalty to the UK may be more ambiguous than a British company, and that if redundancies have to be made then the UK plant maybe more vulnerable as illustrated by the Peugot Ryton plant for example. But this aside, as long as the plant remains here and is employing people and producing vehicles that sell, does it make a difference to the UK economy if the parent company is British or from overseas? |

Tough question. Depends if you look at it from a long term or short term basis. Many companies do put £ back into the community. In terms of schools and sports facilities.
Not sure if the company was British owned would make any difference. All business are there too make a profit. So, what if the company is owned by Toyota they still have too pay taxes to Britain.
Good question. |

It would be nice if we had some British companies to be proud of. If they are still employing people in the UK then it's not too bad for us. One thing I don't get is the steel companies. We made the best steel in the world so why did most of the British steelworks shut down? |

No,
many countries don't have entire industies in their nation, it is healthy.
If the UK can make more money in other areas, and leave the car manufacturing to those who can do it cheaper and better, UK comes up improving overall (the make more money, and can get cheaper cars).
Think of it like this, the UK does very little manufacturing when compaired to China, but that is because the UK consitrates on things that make it more money, and then can take advantage of the cheap labor in China by both saving money on cheaper products, and it save UK industries money that outsource their manufactuing to China. |
