Does it really do any good to argue with a customer service representative?
Every time I get into an argument with one I either get put on hold for a very long time. I'm thinking they are waiting for me to hang up.

Most of the time they don't really listen to what I'm saying, or they do listen and the response is This is not the way things are done.

Sometimes when I ask to speak with a supervisor, I get transfered to a supervisor's voicemail and I never get a call back.

Does it really do any good to argue with a customer service representative?

No it doesnt. Those types of people are trained to not back down and do exactly what is in their protocols. So really its just pointless. Those people never understand anything.

It depends. If you are yelling, acting really really mean, cursing, not listening ..just being rude, then no. I will put you on hold or hang up. But if you are speaking to me like I am a human being, not a dog..you seem rational and like an intelligent person who is willing to work through whatever the issue is without being insane..I've worked wonders for customers. if you have patience I feel like you deserve whatever you are asking for, and you are probably correct. If you act crazy, I think you are a crazy person who just wants something for nothing.

Depends on the company. If you stay calm and ask for the supervisor up front, explain that you have been cut off, hung up on and you just want resolution sometimes that will work.
More effective is face to face if that is possible, or write a letter to the head of customer service at the company, or even the president. Sounds like you are dealing with a company that does not work hard at problem resolution though, so good luck!

You can argue, but you have to be reasonable and polite. I find that if I start off as soon as they answer by telling them "You should know that I am really upset and angry about an issue, and I know it's not your fault personally, but I really need someone to listen to the issue and work with me on this..." That makes you seem humble, and forewarns them that you are upset ... it is very effective. Also, when you get that far, ask for the persons name, extension, or id number.

I'll tell you that if you're just looking for an argument and come across as such we do put people like you on hold. You can't begin to understand what we go through with our phone calls from unreasonable people that think they are numero uno!!!!

The best thing to do (and this is hard) is to remain calm, cool, and collect. Lets face it they most likely do not have the power to fix what your problem is, but if you treat them with respect and realize this you can get much farther. Let them know that you know it is not their fault, yo are just trying to get this resolved, then if you need to speak with a supervisor you have a better chance of accomplishing this, and yes thank them for their help. Instead of immediately putting them on the defensive, recruit their help in resolving the situation. Speak clearly, nicely, and explain your situation in detail. If you give respect, you will receive respect again calm, cool, and collected

over the phone.. i would say no. it is so easy for them to hang up or put you on hold etc...
when they have no choice but to look at you in the face... arguing with them in person is usually more successful because they just want to get you out of there..
i don't argue either way because i work in customer service and i hate when people argue with me.

I don't think arguing does any good any time.

You need to approach the rep with respect, just like you expect respect from them.

It also depends on the company. Remember reps are only following company policy.

I have had great service from Adobe and Epson on some very complicated problems *ICC profiles so the printer and software would act together to print EXACTLY what I saw on the screen.*

I have had lousy CS from HP, Micro$oft, and every Internet provider I have ever had.... and I have been around the Net since the time you needed to know a little about UNIX to get there.

Often they are useless. All they do is discourage. Write a letter to corporate.
