Does it suck to work at kroger?

i was just wondering if kroger sucks more than any other job?

I'm union at Kroger (when I worked there a long time ago). I move on to a higher paying job but decide that I want to retain this one to have second job.

Two weeks go by and I work one day for them again. The next Thursday (payday), my check was 4 dollars. The union had taken out dues for all the weeks I wasn't working for them. I came to find out, by the union rep, that I would have to go to the Kroger credit union each time to make sure I got all my pay.

Funny thing, though, talking to the union guy. He was selling the union to a new employee when I walked in and interrupted him, "Why did you take out $35 of dues from my check?" The newer employee stopped, "Naw, naw I don't want none of that!" and walked away fast.

Union rep was mad.

I don't know, but as a first job, doesn't it seem a bit underhanded to make a professional presentation to a high school age employee when all they would do is stare and audibly search for perks just to get out of the conversation? Worse yet, he made his presentation by the side of a wall in the backroom, not 5 feet from the breakroom! Where's the respect in that? Maybe they're not allowed in the breakroom, I don't know..

Think Kroger is bad? Consider Tom Thumb. The lead stocker would have to walk down every aisle with the manager at 5am as he/she visually checked everything for accuracy. Now you know how Tom Thumb is an awesome looking store.

The Minyard stores (local to my area) are possibly the best stores to work at while being some of the worst in terms of image: their backrooms smelled (in the worst of towns) and only the large stores would have clean backrooms.

Does anyone recognize Food Lion stores? These were smaller stores that promised low prices (which later turned out to be on store products) that got 'busted' on television for unhealthy practices? It was later found out that it was a setup but they never recovered from their problems, and wound up leaving the area.. These stores were the best. Constantly clean backrooms (nothing back there!)..

YES. i really does. you get paid poopie. they make you pay for this thing called a "union" even if your just a kid. they work you as much as they can for as little as they can and if you plan on sticking with them, it will take forever to get a raise. i have done it for the summer, a friend has done it for 4 years! its almost as bad as walmart

i worked at kroger...it really does bite!! the union isn't worth it..they won't help you out and your paying them out of your paycheck...you hardly won't get any!! take my advice and go to wal mart or another retailing job...

Its the service industry, so it is probably not going to be super-interesting or even challenging, but it is a good experience and can be fun if you enjoy your co-workers.

(PS: Don't fall for make money at home pyramid schemes like the prior response. Just work at Kroger)

i actually was a bagboy then a cashier at kroger for one summer in college. i HATED it. as someone mentioned, the Union takes your money but does nothing for you. maybe it helps some of the longer-term workers. but the job was so incredibly dull and monotonous. your breaks are short, and time passes by very slowly. it was one of the worst jobs i ever had.

i worked at the one located on high street in columbus, OH.
