Does registered mail-return receipt requested- really prove anything other than an envelope has been reciever?
Is it therefore a waste of money since it proves nothing about what is IN the envelope?
Someone has to sign for it and the signature is legally binding as having recieved the letter. If they do not read the contents, they are still bound as having recieved it. So no, it is not a waste of money.
If they sign for it, they are assumed legally to having read the contents.

No Sir!
It means that the person who signed for it has been legally given notice of what's inside. Anyone who signs for an envelope and doesn't open it is not removed from the full force of law just as though they did read it.
It is called "presumed delivered" the presumption is that any one will read that.

I work for a law firm and we send certified mail all the time. If you need to go to court, the returned receipt will prove that (depending on who you're sending it to) that person, someone representing that person at the intended address, or a person at a company received your mail. So yes, it does prove something. So if you have something you want to send and want proof that you sent it to somebody, do the certified mailing. Good luck.

I am an attorney and I can tell you that there are plenty of legal procedures that require me to forward a copy of certain papers to opposing counsel or defendant by registered mail - return receipt requested in order to prove that the copy was sent. So, I guess in the eyes of the court its good enough!

It only shows that a parcel of mail was delivered and accepted. It does not guarantee or provide proof that a particuliar letter was received. For legal documents they must be notorized and hand delivered to use in court.
