It used to stand for Hong-Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation
But given the change in its business over the last 20 years that is no longer true. It's actually a UK bank now (it had to change to a UK bank to take over Midland bank) |

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.
Their UK presence is mainly what used to be Midland Bank, which HSBC acquired during the 1980s.
As the previous answer said, the parent company, HSBC Holdings plc, are now headquartered in London, UK but they're listed on London, Hong Kong, New York, Paris and Bermuda stock exchanges. |
