Does this make me a bad employee?
It doesn't happen all the time, but whenever I am asked if I will stay over, I refuse to do so. I do have a life outside of work. I often have to close, and normally when they are asking me to stay over, it is on a day when I am going to be able to leave earlier because I opened that day. They recently asked me to stay over 3 hours this upcoming Saturday because they are firing one of the closers. I told them I couldn't, but I am afraid they will try to make me somehow. What would you do? Am I a bad employee for wanting to have a life?

if you're still a new employee then you should sacrifice for a good name but you said "happens all the time" so it means you have to live your life. work is just part of it, not all.

in every business the unexpected comes up, a lot of employers when interviewing will ask if you are willing to work extra, if this happened to you and you answered yes well then it is expected. if you plan on moving up in this company, being flexible as well as being able to help them out in a time of need for them does reflect on your work ethics. If you are in just for the job and to get out and you have no intentions of moving up in this company let them know you can't. As with most jobs there come a time when your personal life has to sit on the back burner. I personally have worked my butt off, stayed late, came when called in and received nothing in return. But at other jobs, pay raises and hours reflected my ability to work hard. it all comes down to how dedicated to your job you are.

in the eyes of the corporate monsters, yes it does because they want you to have the companies best interest at mind at all times, but i don't think you will get fired because of it (well you cant), you just wont get as many promotions as the employees who suck up to the bosses

Nope. Rule your life. Don't let work rule you.

You are risking antagonizing the wrong person.

You may have a life, ( we all do) but your employer's needs must come first. If you constantly refuse and the wrong person hears about it, you might become history. This may sound cold hearted, but that's the way it is.

They can fire you for refusing that work.

If you worked for me, I would fire you.

I doubt you would ever see a promotion.

I do not think this makes you a bad employee.

However, it will probably mean no further promotion for you. The reason I say that is that the next level after closer is a supervisory position of some kind. A position that will require you to fill in for those that are ill, on vacation, or just don't appear.

So, if you are content with your job and don't care about being promoted you should be okay. On the other hand if you are looking for a promotion you should be willing to work the extra hours when you don't already have something else scheduled.

Hope this helps
