Does walmart have the right to routinely demand to see receipts and review contents of a shopping carts?
my local walmart demands to see receipts and review contents of shopping carts if a customer is leaving with an item not in a bag. e.g. 25 pound bag of kitty litter

Whereas I am not a huge fan of Wallmart's I can see their concern for the possibilities of theft and protecting themselves. Loss from theft (shoplifting) is a multi-billion dollar problem and merchants have the right to protect themselves. Say, you own a bicycle store & have several employees. You are outside your shop and you see someone pushing a new bicycle out of the door of your shop (Yes, thieves actually do this, thinking no one confront them because its so obvious & open). There's no way to see if that person paid for the bike or if they are stealing it. Would you confront that person and ask for a proof of purchase? Now, the person actually did pay for the bike, but can't find the receipt. Would you take their word for it or would you ask that person to identify the person he paid the money to and then confirm the sale with that employee? There are courteous and tactful ways of handling these situations, and if done in this manner, I find nothing wrong with it. I've got to side with Walmart on this one.

yes and it has been upheld in court.
it also helps to reduce costs from theft.

Yes, they do. It not only protects you it protects the company.

The real reason behind the practice is not so much as they think that people are shoplifting, but to make sure cashiers are properly ringing up purchases.

they do have the right because, it stops shoplifting so that they don't have to chase down people who shoplift they can just take away the item u didn't pay for.

Absolutely! It's the manager's decision & whether he/she are in fault would be determined by higher personnel. If you are in doubt, call Wal-Mart's main phone number and ask to speak to someone. Are you in a high crime rate area? Maybe your store manager has had bad experiences in the past. Hey, it is better to be safe as shoplifting rates have soared & it is sad to have to be harassed for a receipt, especially after putting it away not to mention having had spent money to feel victimized, but that's how the world has ended up.

BB
Of course they do. It cuts down on shoplifting, which saves all of us money.

Yes, they have the legal right.

Whether it's moral, ethical, or good customer relations is another issue. This basic assumption that the customer steals is yet another reason to shop someplace else. I'd rather pay slightly more and do my shopping at a store which assumes I'm *not* a thief.

Yes they do.I know of two different incidents where two guys in Wal-Mart picked up a canoe and put it over their heads and walked out.And two other guys took a large TV.No one stopped to ask them for a reciept because they figured that carrying something that big must have been paid for.
