| Employers, why not make a transition from 5 day-8 hour workweek to 4 day-10 hour workweek? |
There would be many advantages to this. Everyone could save on gas, spend more time with families, and not feel such a burden from work. That extra day could be used to do something more recreational at home. In effect, less stressed employees would be more productive at work. Additional Details There has to be someway to work around the days off. You could possibly rotate the personnel for on and off days to cover all days. |

Well, some reasons for and against:
For:
* It can provide better coverage in a 24-hour plant. You have at least an hour of overlap per 8 hrs vs. none. Easier transition and handoff between shifts.
* Employees tend to like it
* We did this in a manuf plant and productivity went up 30%
Against:
* At least in my state (CA), there are overtime rules and rules with unions about working past 8 hours in a day, so it can be more expensive. You have to get agreement that this isn't overtime, which can cost money in negotiations.
* You need more people to cover the same work-week if they are only working 4 days instead of 5
If I had to pick, I would be in favor of 4-10s vs. 5-8s. But not all industries could work with this.
Good question! |

I feel your pain! I wish my company would do that. I know a lot of companies have flex time but smaller companies cannot do this due to lack of enough employees. |

It sounds like a good idea but there could be some kind of reason they don't. |

A lot of companies do this already. It's sometimes called a 9/80 program (you work 80 hours in 9 days) or 4/40- 40 hours in 4.
And while there are a lot of good reasons to do it (as you stated) the fact is there is not much incentive for employers to complicate their lives by doing so. Usually (as I had in past jobs) there are people who couldn't take advantage of it- or there wasn't coverage for their job. Then the company has to look into temps - which cost $$$. And if they only give it to some people, now you really have issues. And so it gets complicated- and companies don't like complications.
So while it is a great idea- I loved it when I had it- there are a lot of reasons why big companies don't do it. |

The UAW had talks with the big 3. 30 years ago but couldn't come to a agreement, it had to do with over time for the 2 hours, from 8 hours to 10 a day. Although most of the members were for it, it never happened. just a example of the union knowing whats best for you. |

The company I work for actually DOES do this! Between memorial day and labour day, people have the option of working 10 hours a day for four days and taking a three day weekend. After Labour day though, there are expected to work 10 hours Five days a week. Tradeoff :P |

We are a small business. Our customers operate their aircraft 7 days a week. We are already two days a week behind them. If we don't respond to our customers' needs, someone else will and we will go out of business. We can't afford to hire personnel to cover the extra day off, and management wouldn't get that day off anyway. |
