How does your company go about giving the receptionist breaks/lunch? I am an admin. assist, and when the receptionist goes on breaks it's my job to sit at her desk and answer the phone. This drives me nuts cause it cuts into my time and I can't do any work out there.
I'm the receptionist/ admin assist/ sales rep/ secretary/ and about a billion other things. I don't get a lunch. I work while I eat at my desk. Be happy that you get a lunch at all.

the same thing happens here where i work. everyone just kind of fills in when someone has a break or is out. it sucks, but there isn't much you can do about it.

We all kinda of help each other out here, Its a small office though. When the receptionist goes to lunch at 12 then one of us just goes to lunch at 1. But then again were a small office (about 12)

That is standard procedure. You need to plan it into your day and figure out what task you can do at her desk. Until you can get some rank, it's something you have to live with.
Even though the receptionist is low person on the totem pole, she is the first face anyone sees. Being cheerful and ready to assist customers is essential.
Keep in mind that customers DO come before paperwork and try not to let the inconvenience affect your outlook.

My firm gets all of the secretaries to rotate the schedule. We get a calendar and sign up all secretaries and just rotate around. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes we trade places and such. The recpetionist goes at 11:30 but if she wants to go at a different time then she will ask the person that is supposed to sit for the day if they mind sitting at a different time.
