Why Do Corporations Issue Stock?
Businesses issue stock to raise capital.
Advantages of issuing stock:

A Company can raise more capital than it could borrow.

A Company does not have to make periodic interest payments to creditors.

A Company does not have to make principal payments.

Disadvantages of Issuing Stock:

The principal owners have to share their ownership with other shareholders.

Shareholders have a voice in policies that affect the company operations.

To raise capital.

Issuing stock (i.e. selling equity) is one way to raise money. The other is through debt.

in addition to the reasons already mentioned, choosing to issue stock over debt is in theory determined by what's called the Modigliani-Miller theorem.

in practice, a company that feels that its stock is over-valued has an incentive to issue stock rather than debt.

To raise money. It's a form of borrowing in a way. Sell a million shares of stock for a dollar each and now you have a million dollars for the company to spend on hopefully business expansion, etc. In exchange, you give up control of the company to a board of directors that represents the stockholders interests in making sure the company runs in a way to increase the value of the company. If the company doubles in value, the share price should go to $2.

In business and finance, a share (also referred to as equity share) of stock means a share of ownership in a corporation (company). In the plural, stocks is often used as a synonym for shares especially in the United States, but it is less commonly used that way outside of North America.[1]

In the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Australia, stock can also refer to completely different financial instruments such as government bonds or, less commonly, to all kinds of marketable securities.[2]
