What do you think of websites offering free expensive stuff after you complete a survey or sign up for a subscription? What's the catch? Do they really send you your free Mac laptop??? Sounds tempting but I worry about my privacy. Should I try or just consider it a scam. Thanks. |

Actually these arent scams.
There is a good article on http://www.freekeyring.com that explains how the whole free xbox / ps3 / ipod / laptop scheme actually works. It references another good article by wired.com which goes into even more detail about it.
There are numerous scammy type free offers, but there are legitimate ones being ran buy a company called gratis internet, a US advertising company that developed the idea.
These schemes arent scams, but they do take a little effort to complete and most people give up before they finish them.
Its a pure numbers game for the advertisers, they get more income from the 99% of people signing up to the offers and not completing the requirements to get the item than they spend giving stuff to the 1% that acually manage to complete all the steps.
Read the articles before signing up, then either do it or not. |

some websites, such as the freeipods.com family, are actually legitimate businesses giving free ipods, psps, computers, handbags, etc. to people after they and several referrals complete "trial" offers from wholly legitimate companies (i.e. a 30-day subscription to netflix). a friend of mine went through with this process and after 3 months of waiting is now walking around with the same ipod i paid $300 for, and he didn't even need to cover shipping. although most are scams phishing for your email address, it all depends on the company. the best thing to do would be to do your homework. |

I personally believe that you do not get the free laptop or whatever--and you get spam instead. I know someone who is very naive, always signs up for the free laptop & fills out her email address when they ask for it. But instead of getting an email that she won a free laptop, she always gets spam from the companies instead. |

I've gone through that thing of getting "free" stuff several times. Personally, I believe it is as close to a scam as one can get. You go through survey after survey during which they want you to give your e-mail address and other contact information. There were so many surveys I finally gave up. But, believe me, they use your contact information. Once they get that you get bombarded by unwanted e-mails and phone calls. I'd rather go buy the thing they're giving away free because it sure ain't free going through them surveys. |

Many of them are legitimate, yes. They are a form of GPT (get paid to) sites. An industry that is paying people monthly. I have been participating in these sites for two years and receive monthly check and paypal payments from them. I have also received an iPod among other items. The most important part about investing your time to one of these sites it making sure that it has a history of reliable payout. Many of the sites have forums with Payment Proof - be sure to check in to that. Do a google search of the site's name to see what members are saying. This is a scam. They wont send you an ipod or a laptop. It will just put viruses and spyware on your computer. DONT GO FOR IT!! |
