I have fullfield my 2 year contract with directv as of June 2008. But when I called to cancel my service 7/31/08 they said that since I ordered 2 new basic boxes in Nov. of 2008 that my contract was extend another 18 months. I can not cancel my account without a fee until Nov. 2009. Does anyone know how this is possiable when I only signed for the orignal 2 year contract? Any suggestions Please |

Read your contract carefully. That should be your first step.
Next, call them and keep talking to a manager and getting answers.
- Have you known that, you wouldn't have asked for anything new.
- Where is the clause that states this?
- Play up that the service has been terrible
The best thing I can tell you is to keep at it. Keep talking to managers and go as high up the chain as you can go. |

I would cancel anyways, send back the boxes and challenge the contract. I've had a similar experience with DirectTV misrepresenting the services and how much it would cost. I can't give you legal advice but anyone with a basic understanding of US law knows it is -their- burden to prove there is a contract, not yours to disprove it.
I wish you the best because I really hate that kind of business practice...
Anyone else, remember to insist that everything that you are signing up for is written out clearly and sent to you to read before agreeing to installation and signing a contract. There are some fast talkers on the other side of the sales counter or phone conversation.
EDIT: Steves95, that's interesting... can you point me to something to reference for that? It might come in handy in the future. Thanks :-) |

Unless you personally signed a contract extention when you ordered your new boxes, I don't think the have any rights to bind you to an extended contract.
The best thing to do is contact the cable/satelite provider you intend to go with and ask them to deal with Directv. Most buisnesses will automatically contact the previous provider and discontinue services for you as-soon-as you sign on. They do this as a courtesy to their new customers. |
