Mad Professor
HBOS takeover - is it just me who smells a rat?
Firstly there's a run on the shares of a perfectly sound financial institution devaluing it enormously, then another bank kindly steps in to buy it out at a ludicrously low price to create a 'superbank'.

The resulting institution is so large that, if it wasn't for the current financial panic, the takeover would not be allowed by the Monopolies Commission. Instead it is positively endorsed by Parliament.

I may be an old cynic, but I expect there are some fat cats getting even fatter because of this. And what will happen after the current panic is over and more than a third of the mortage market is controlled by one institution?

Nope, I posted a similar question when I heard about that they were in talks- http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag6u39tWv_QG4.JPyC6ZUtogBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20080917114723AADTuF2

I completely agree with you. Its yet another case of the rich getting richer and the setting up of a monopoly. They have taken advantage of the "crisis" in order to do so. Its also funny when banks do get in to difficulty like Northern Rock that they believe in the idea of - Privatising profit and Nationalising Losses!

yes, i agree.

i am sick of it already! surely these panics are deliberately created and manipulated by powers with secret agenda?/
i am a Halifax customer and i am wondering where this is all going. in the end the ordinary ppl are the worst hit after each of these 'scams'

i think frankly the HBOS bosses should refuse such mergers as their financial base is strong.

Dad's found yer scoo'er
It is very worrying and your cynicism is completely justified. I tried to find out more from a friend who works for the Halifax but they are being treated like mushrooms.

I have to say when I heard the news this morning I was concerned, typically all rules and principals go out of the window as soon as money is involved

Not only that, last night on Newsnight it was rumoured that HSBC would take over RBS!

It's fish that I smell, and it is stinking!

Perhaps - looks to me like you've been smelling too much of the white stuff.
