Hard as hell. need some smart person's help. long and thorough answer will get best answer?
hello. I am going on a debate for a harvard tournament for high school. I had the following topic which i dont know where to start from, it is a bill to go green. I am representing the con side of the debate.
The argument follows: Any company who goes envoironmentally freindy will recieve extensive tax benefits.
Some points are:
The commitee is chosen by the president.
The This commitee will be responsible for determining environmental benchmarks that will merit tax benifts. the commitee also chooses tax benifits from industry to industry, and only favors companies. not small buisneeses
This is hard as hell because you are trying to defend the status quo....which has not proven to be beneficial to the environment. I think that if you can win this debate, you should run for office!
Let's see, I would say something that sounds naive....the president is the chosen leader of the nation and therefore can be the one who selects the taskforce/committee members consisting of his friends, oh , I mean experts. Established industries can be expected to have the true experts with years of experience, like GE...and they would understand the realities and economics impacting industries so therefore could set realistic benchmarks and timeframes. Small businesses start ups, it would be presumed, could not have the long term experience to make accurate projections.
Despite your best efforts, I really hope your side never wins.
Reality has proven its a lousy system and I hope the other side wins.

Going green, while good for the environment typically costs quite a bit to get rolling. That would be your argument, that the tax benifit isn't great enough to make it an equitable move for most companies. I'd explore the costs invloved with retrofitting etc.

My guess would be to make sure you bring up drawbacks. Such as when they compensate the companies that do go green what is going to happen with the others who do not or can not. Are they going to be fined have extra taxes imposed ect.
