Fire them if they slack off.

you can start by not trying to teach them how to spell

It's not easy. Part of it is taking an interest in the people that work for you. When you ask how their day is, LISTEN and RESPOND. For example, if they talk about their kids one day, ask them them how little David is doing in his first year of school the next week.

If someone seems to be having a rough day, be open so they can talk to you about their problems. Then keep it to yourself and don't blab their personal life to anyone else.

Ask people how the company could make their jobs easier. If there's something feasible in what they tell you, put it into action. Also, get people's opinions on decisions that will affect their jobs. If they feel like they have a voice in the matter, they'll adjust to the change much better.

Then there's the tough love part. Sometimes there are people you just can't reach. They don't have a good work ethic and don't see why they should do anything extra to help out. Weed these people out. All they do is bring down the morale of those that are willing to go the extra mile for your business.

Celebrate your business successes together and make big deals out of them. If there is criticism to dish out, do it privately on an individual basis. Keep it on the down low.

Really, these are just tip of the iceburg statements. There are so many books on the subject. I'd suggest going to Barnes and Nobles and picking up a few. You could start an informal 'management library' for all of your supervisory team.

Good luck!

Get out there and work with them. A lot of people like to see the boss working or want to be asked how their day is going.

I am not sure what business you have, but if you have someone that is a go between they will push them to work hard just to look good them self.

Reward those who work harder than the others.
