Has Wal-Mart changed for the better? Is Target just as bad as Wal-Mart?
Has Wal-Mart improved its practices over the past few years? Also, I have heard that Target also attempts to deunionize its workers, pays them wages as low as Wal-Mart, and imports the bulk of its products from China, Mexico, Guatemala, and other developing countries.

Wal-Mart is rotten and remains rotten, and the only way it can improve is to go out of business and let a more ethical company take its place.

As for unions, that's the place where change could occur. The other answerer's statement on the "Open Door Policy" and seeing third party representation as unnecessary is straight out of Wal-Mart's propaganda book.

The reason Wal-Mart opposes unions is because it's far easier to silence and dismiss a single worker who dares to speak up, but it becomes progressively more difficult to silence and dismiss a larger group of workers. After all, the workers, when united, will never be defeated. There is strength in numbers, and Wal-Mart likes being able to crush its workers like bugs if they stay divided.

Very true. Its time to stop shopping at big box.

This is a hard time now, and jobs are hard to get with so many people unemployed or just being laid off. Companies like Walmart and Target purchase products from developing countries such as China, Mexico, Guatemala, and India, etc. in order to cut the cost of products thereby they can sell them cheaper than the others. The garment manufacturer in China pays their seemstress between $50 to $80 per month (not a day, month). No industrialized countries can compete with this kind of wage differential. A T-shirt made in US factory would have to charge a minimum of $20. If it's made in China, stores can sell as cheap as $3 per shirt.

i hear walmart now owns target/shopko/sears n kmart-they are cutting ppl/pay/insur etcc n importin 90%---dont know if its true tho---i hate them all n i hate that there is not enuf to choose from---my mom n i own a shop n ppl need to keep locals open n stop bulk shoppin!

Walmart is trying to overhaul its appearance. As a consequence, it is actually doing some good things, but most of them are largely superficial. And Target is about 95% as bad as Walmart ever was.

If you can't avoid these stores, make sure you only buy things there that are genuinely good deals. The worst thing you can do is give them significant profits.

shrugs...first of all .all of the retail companies pay low wages..target isnt unionized..if they were ,there wouldnt be a target...same for walmart...i cant speak for targets views on unions ,but i can speak for walmart...walmart has NEVER been against unions, they dont understand why a 3rd person has to speak for the associates when walmart has an open door policy...open door policy means that when we have an problem we can go right up the chain of command without worry of being punished for it..and trust me...we use open door policy quite often...even gone over the store managers head a few times....anyways...my personal views on unions ,are they are great but not when they directly deal with customers, for instance..you need help in hardware for something...i work in groceries..sucks to be you because i cant help you..not my job...would you want that type of customer service? i wouldnt..not to mention say walmart did get unionized...wouldnt we have to dish out money out of our paychecks to pay for the union fees? now who is going to promise us more money to compensate for those fees coming out of our check...not the union they cant promise pay raises...as far as buying over seas...arent you AWARE that most of the companies are NOW manufacturing overseas....you can thank american consumers for that partially...the consumers control the economy..the retail stores see what consumers want and tries their best to give it to them...its cheaper to manufacture overseas, so companies try to find the best deal and passes the saving to the customers...if youre so upset about the companies buying overseas...then get rid of the products in your house and start buying american...course that would mean getting rid of your computer, phone ,electronics, possibly your car ect. willing to give that up? no? then stop blaming retail for what youre buying..below is a link to help you buy american as well as other reasons why companies have moved overseas

Unions suck for retail workers. My sister's been working at a retail-unionized. and every time they give her a good raise, they reduce her hours. and a lot of her raise and higher wage goes to union dues.
it's complete crap. the unions have turned into a money making machine. the interfere with business by sticking their way in their and taking some profit without much benefit to workers.
True, a while back they helped workers get out of bad working conditions. But businsses has learned that they do better when they treat their cutomers well. Especially in service industires.
