I heard they had stopped layaway throughout all the stores. I never heard any reason given, but I often wondered if it wasn't just a big drag, seeming to involve a lot of expenses to run the layaway system for little return. A few years ago I was at that counter returning something, and a woman next to me was putting $25 worth of merchandise on layaway. If those three or four small items were left on the store shelves they would have been sold in no time. As it was, they couldn't be sold, and Walmart's was just providing free storage for those items, until (if ever) the customer came back to get them.The whole thing seemed just not cost effective, and "cost effectiveness" is, of course, what Wal-Mart aims for in order that they can keep the price of their merchandise as low as possible - which is the very slogan they operate under. |
