Wolfgang92 | Has anybody ever been let go due to a large corporate acquisition of their company? |
I would like to know what to expect, as Ingersoll-Rand is acquiring Trane, and my buddy works for them and is concerned he might not have a job after the sale goes through. I am looking for real world stories of people that either survived or were let-go due to a corporate take-over. He is a good employee for Trane, but what do the corporate honchos look for when deciding who to eliminate? |

When the company I worked for went thru that we were told no one would lose their job and then a week later they started cutting people. Usually, the first hired are let go and then they get rid of dead wood and the high paying position. Being a good employee doesn't matter. When my turn came, I left and moved to another state. They called me several times asking would I come back because no one else knew how to do my job and they were falling apart. (I ordered and inventoried all the product for the company and did cost analysis. I told them they should have thought about that before cutting me loose! |

It happens every day. There is no rhyme or reason as to who gets the ax, every corp.has it's own methods. As a general rule, the higher up the chain of command, the more likely you are to be fired, as they want to have their own people running the show. Worker Bee's and middle management are usually safe, but any higher than that, get ready for anything. |

My dad worked as a plant manager at a place for over 20 years when another company bought them out and "eliminated" his position. It took a long time for him to get back on his feet. Because of how old he was and how much money he previously made, nobody wanted to hire him.
Good luck to your husband, I hope he doesn't have to struggle. |

It is a very real concern. I've seen a number of examples of this happening. The plain truth is that companies don't go out and acquire other ones just to keep everything the same.
And usually, the employees of the acquired company come out worse that those of the acquiring one. |

They look for "problem" employees and higher paid ones. Eliminate the dead weight and hire 2 people for the price of one... so if your friend is sick alot, late alot, does a poor job, then he's probably someone to be worried... also if he makes a large salary.
In my 2 downsizing experiences that I survived, managers, senior manager, partners directors plus temps and dead weight were the first to go... unfortunately the third time around my position was consolidated with another and then eliminated... so I had to start pounding the pavement... |
