Has anyone heard of a construction scam? Where they say they are coming?
to put on a new roof and then require you to pay 1/2 the fee up front and they never show up to do the work?
We noticed he is not in any phone book or on the internet.
Could this be a scam just to get our money without planning on doing the work?

Forget this they showed up and she has a new roof.
They turned out to be real nice and now she feels bad ever doubting them.

If he is a total stranger you need to do your homework.
Does he have references? What job is he working on right now?
It is best to use contractors that friends ,family, neighbors recommend.
Would you hand over a thousand dollars to a total stranger?

Ruth be careful! I hope you haven't given this company a deposit. Before doing business with this or any company, get references and check them out, also check if they are a member of the Better Business Bureau (you can check it out online) or any credible/respected construction or business association.

There are many many scams like that! Especially in places that have recently been through a natural disaster such as a tornado, etc... My best friend's inlaws just got scammed for $170,000 in a situation much like the one you're describing, except their contractor was supposed to be building a brand new house to replace the one they lost in a tornado. I've heard of that numerous times with everything from the roof to the entire house. Be very wary.

if you've paid in cash, you could have a problem. if you've paid w/a check then put a stop to it. either way, continue to attempt to contact the person you hired. if you can't, then call the police and report all the info you have on them. if they are honest, or intending to do the work, the stop payment on a check will get their attention...
