Has anyone heard of an insurance investigator?
This is a person who investigates claims of fraudulant injury. Let's say someone claims to be disabled. If there is a suspicion of fraud, an insurance investigator would follow them and maybe photograph them jet skiing or something like that. Has anyone heard of this , and particularly what education would be needed and who would I contact about employment?

Most states have an insurance regulatory agency as part of state government, and within those agencies, there is usually a section devoted to insurance fraud. Some of the larger states, such as California and New York, might offer entry level positions, but most of them generally look for people with prior law enforcement investigative experience. Private insurance companies also have fraud investigators. You would have a better chance of getting a job with one of them if you do not have any prior LE experience. It also helps to have a college degree, as insurance fraud is considered a white-collar crime.

Yes I have heard about this type of employment. Why don't you just find one and ask him or her how they got into the Field

You would need to get your PI license to do this.

Dan-VP
Well I do know that they exist all over the place but as to your specific situation I couildn't really tell if it is true or not.

Go to your State employment office - they should have all the details there, even if the position may be under federal jurisdiction.

swatthefly
its a private investigator whom specializes in insurance fraud.

just get your PI license. and if you are just starting up, try contacing a local PI office and working there for a couple years before you start your own office.

good luck!

Yes its real and I have heard of them...you would need a college degree,I'm sure.

I actually almost took a job doing this, and I have a friend that does it. It depends on the insurance company as to what background and education you need. I have a degree in criminal justice and this did help a little bit. I never found one company where you needed to have your PI license. Most of the companies just took you on and trained you. Some of the work is a lot like private investigating but for the most part the companies don't have the money to pay you to sit around and watch outside their house unless they are really paying them a lot of money.

My girlfriend worked for Prudential and said they had a department of Insurance Investigators hired. You should contact the Human Resources Dept of insurance companies to get the job requirements and job availability info.

most of the big places would like a degree in risk management, otherwise you'd need to be a claims adjuster or underwriter for a few years...

jay

I have a friend who was an insurance investigator. Not all of them follow people who are under investigation for personal injury fraud. There are different types of insurance investigation.

My friend sifted through filings from hospitals for medicare and medicaid fraud and also insurance billing scams in doctors' offices.

A background in law enforcement helps, so does a college degree or some other equivalent.

I do not know who to contact, but I have heard of it. Maybe you could check with an insurance carrier that deals with Workman's comp.....my husband had an employee on Workman's comp. He was seen doing all sorts of things that he said he could not do because of his "bad back". So, a Workman's comp investigator was called in to watch and ask neighbors questions. He also got a video of his using his back. He had to repay some of his Workman's comp.

You really need to go to Wal-Mart and buy "Memento" in Blu-Ray.
