bucksolutions1 | Have you ever been or are a supervisor, manager, CEO, or Owner? If yes please answer.? |
Do you want someone that is at work most days a half hour early, works hard and get the job done but makes a few mistakes here and there. Or do you want someone that is lazy, stands or sits around talking all day, talks on the phone to his or her friend for as long as two hours or more a day, takes extended breaks, but doesn't make a mistake? |

Well personally I've encountered both types, and they both have the ability to get the job done. First showing up to work 1/2 early does not make any differance because they can't start for another 1/2 hour, so on time or early doesn't matter as long as they are not late. I do not manage right now and where i work at now extended breaks are very normal and nobody seems to care as long as the work gets done on time and accurate. Both kinds of employees are exceptable as long as work does get done. The only differance is the firs employee is managment materal and has a good chance for promotion and more hours, the second will always be a laborer. |

i would rather have someone reliable that i can count on than someone that is not. i would rather assist in fixing a simple mistake and in the process help that person learn more about their job than be on someone all day to at least start the job. |

I believe you have answered your own question.
A reliable, dedicated, hard worker is always wanted. Occasionally making a mistake? we all make mistakes!
Didn't I make one hiring that lazy person over there talking on the phone with their friend after taking an unauthorized two hour lunch break? |

I have managed a few different businesses and also owned my own at one point. I would prefer the hard worker who makes the odd mistakes because if you look at long term, once you have this person completely trained (and completely training someone can take a couple of years) and they get more experience on the job they will eventually quit making mistakes. Then you will have an excellent employee for a long time. Chances are the lazy person is eventually going to quit or just not show up (probable sooner rather then later) then you are right back at the begining again. Good luck |

Generally most would want person A.
But it depends on the cost of the mistake. Sometimes even little mistakes can cost a carrer. Often the bigger the company, the more CYA like this happens.
Depends on how much the supervisor likes or MUST keep this other person. Sometimes Billy Bob knows someone in power so must be employed and ignored.
You sound grumpy. good luck. |

Certainly, Hard Working person, i.e., First Type than second type. Groom First Type person, to make sure not to make any mistake at all. A person willing to perform can always improved, upon than person who is not committed and not willing devoted. Each person supporting you, should preferably set example for other team member. |

I guess we're assuming that Person A and Person B are both completing the same AMOUNT of work.
If Person A is showing up half an hour early and busting his or her buttt, just to keep up with Person B, who is chatting on the phone for half a day, then it seems to me that Person B has a lot of underused capacity that needs to be utilized.
In this kind of situation, you're not likely to get any more work out of Person A than you're already getting. Person B, however, seems like s/he could do twice as much work as s/he's doing, now.
If I were the supervisor of Person A and Person B, I'd start loading more work on Person B. If Person B accepted the extra work and accomplished it with a good attitude, I'd probably keep Person B on the payroll. But if Person B were to keep on chatting half the day, and not getting done with all the extra work I assigned, I'd have to dump Person B.
As things stand, I suspect that Person B is probably bored. When people are bored, it's because they're not challenged. If people stay bored long enough, they start causing trouble in the company, gossipping, back-biting, doing all sorts of destructive stuff. Person B's supervisor has to make sure that Person B is fully utilized, and soon, or that supervisor is in for trouble.
Of course, if Person A is working rings around Person B, and Person B is on the phone for hours, every day, then I'd fire Person B in a heartbeat. |

as a supervisor one should focus on effectivity not just efficiency in terms of time...moreover how easyrelatively is it to coach the lazy guy to be more proactive compared the hard working but lil mistake guy.....there cannot be a black and white answer....to be a ceo one has to also learn to build a team |
