Help. I'm going back to work for a company I was with for 11 years. Should I lose the benefits of my tenure?
I was gone for 1 year and 8 months. This is a management position. This company rewards employees with 2 weeks paid vacation until the 5th year when they earn 3 weeks. Should I go back expecting 2 weeks paid vacation or 3?

OK, You are going back to work for a company that you have not worked for almost two years ago. Technically, you would be starting over however, there is almost always an offer letter that comes with these types of careers especially if you are working a corporate job.

My advice is to renegotiate your offer letter to include a mid-level performance review in six months (more money) and 3 weeks vacation rather than 2. I know this may sound as if you are asking too much however most companies, especially in management positions, expect this type of request.

Good Luck!

I think you should expect 3, and negotiate for 4 !

This is an area for negotiations.

Some companies will negotiate for past service for benefit purposes and some companies will only start you as a "new hire".

If you did not get this question resolved prior to the Company making you a job offer, it may be too late. But, it never hurts to inquire.

depends, but most companies you are starting over at the bottom.

The answer to your question is dependent on your former company's policy on returning former employees.

In my former company, the returning former employee was entitled to the same benefit package as new hires. The only edge that given to her - she did not undergo the 6 month probationary period. She got her former position on regular basis.

Unless you were on military leave or a company sanctioned sabbatical you can expect the company to consider you as a new hire starting at the base paid vacation benefit. I think everyone agrees with that statement.

Now as to the proposition of what you should expect. It is going to depend upon your bargaining position. If the level of skill your position requires is significant you may have enough bargaining power to "call your own shots". For example if you are in a highly specialized technical field where employees are difficult to replace and there is extensive training required you should be able to negotiate for whatever you want.

If you are in a position where replacement employees are readily available you will have a weak bargaining position and will probably have to accept the two weeks paid vacation.

Expect the 2, normally you'll be starting out all over again when there is an absence like that, unless you were on some type of sabbatical and didn't have to reapply and get hired, if you reinterviewed, you are considered a new employee.
