I'm an ex Home Depot employee. Although the employees do their best, the company is so bottom line conscious that, in an effort to control bottom line expenses, there are never enough people on the floor. Customers are frustrated since it is difficult to get help when you need it.
I don't know if Lowe's is any different, but I can say that I really prefer ACE for my hardware needs. |

Lowes....simple, They have great customer service.
Home Depot has poor service and I can never locate the product I want, so I have to ask...good luck with that one.
Had to go to HD this weekend for a new garden hose, you know where I found it? In the isle listed as Electrical products. Now who in their right mind would associate Electricity and Water??? |

Home Depot carries more items for contractor type people but I have found their customer service terrible and boycotted Home Depot for an entire year....no employee was allowed to buy things on our company credit card because of a bad deal over a measley $300 shower door. |

I prefer Home Depot-I like the garden selection better there and the staff is more helpful at the store I frequent. I take the free classes and have learned to do things I never thought I could do! |

I go to both, and I've had good and bad customer service at both. I like Lowes tool and light selection, Home Depot has better garden stuff.
The one comment I have specifically about Home Depot is "PEOPLE, you sell lights and brooms here, can't you turn on some lights so it isn't so dark, and please clean this place up. Oh, and in the winter, close the damn doors and turn on the heat, its freezing in here!" |

There is one of each near me. Before I moved to my present home I always went to HD because it was convenient - no Lowe's within a reasonable drive.
Now that I have a choice I go to Lowe's more often than not. Their prices are very competitive with HD, but the Lowe's stores seem to be brighter and cleaner and better laid out that HD. And then there is the customer service issue. It is generally easier to find an associate at Lowe's than at HD.
They both carry pretty much the same line of products, but I find a better quality of lumber products (particularly in the smaller cuts - 2x4 - 2x6 - fence pickets for instance) at Lowe's. |

Well I like the both. We have 1 of each near our home. I tend to go to Lowes far more though. I think they cater better to the Consumer, which I am where Home Depot, at least in my town seems a better fit for contractor types.
About two years ago the Home Depot here began to look dirty, a little unorganized and the store has no "Customer Appeal". It dosn't look very nice.
Maybe a different Manager or something.
Lowe's here looks very nice and well kept and has great "Customer Appeal", again maybe due to the local Manager.

I used to work at Home Depot. Managers knew there was very little staff and yet they did not bother to higher. They said it was so we could all get a higher bonus at the end of the quarter. I guess it makes sense but I saw a lot of unhappy customers because a few people can only attend so many. I am a frequent shopper at HD only because I know where everything is at. Yes dirty store, incompetent employees, needs more light etc..
I have never been to Lowes only because HD is closer, but I'd probably prefer it if there was one near by. |
