How are gas prices so low and getting lower?
I feel like an idiot for not knowing this, but why is it that we were paying almost 5.00 a gallon and now it might go as low as 1.00/gallon. Could someone explain the process to me please? Thank you.

Well, I think it is because gas prices are really susceptible to speculation. When there were rumors of an energy crisis, and everyone was so concerned, the prices of gas really leaped up -- this in spite of the fact that what the gas stations had in their storage tanks was exactly the same gas as they had the day before when prices were lower. The panic fed further panic.

Now, I think, gas and oil dealers realize what that panic has reaped. I read on Yahoo! News that the airports in the US were like ghost towns over the holiday weekend, and that people were choosing not to drive all the way over to Grandma's house, but to stay home instead. I think they foresee a big dent in their profits as Americans tighten their belts, so the gas prices are going down.

(-: I certainly don't think it's out of the goodness of their hearts, to make sure poor people can pay for their heating oil. But, hey, it's almost the Season of Love. OK, I believe Uncle Big Oil Scrooge is giving us all a Christmas break.

(I do hope that people do keep their belts tightened, though. We *will* run out of fuel one of these days, and the more stingy we are about it, the longer we can enjoy a civilization with fossil fuels.)

Gas Prices are controlled by the price of oil. In July when gas was almost $5 a gallon oil was $147.27 a barrel and now gas is almost $1 because oil is down to $40.81 a barrel. these are levels not seen since 2004

First person is right. You could see $1 gas pretty soon. It sucks though, gas is low but the economy is ####!

A Primer on Gasoline Prices

Gasoline is one of the major fuels consumed in the United States and the main product refined from crude oil. Consumption in 2007 was about 142 billion gallons, an average about 390 million gallons per day and the equivalent of about 61% of all the energy used for transportation, 44% of all petroleum consumption, and 17% of total U.S. energy consumption. About 47 barrels of gasoline are produced in U.S. refineries from every 100 barrels of oil refined to make numerous petroleum products. Most gasoline is used in cars and light trucks. It also fuels boats, recreational vehicles, and farm, construction, and landscaping equipment. While gasoline is produced year-round, extra volumes are made and imported to meet higher demand in the summer. Gasoline is delivered from oil refineries mainly through pipelines to an extensive distribution chain serving about 167,500 retail gasoline stations in the United States.1 There are three main grades of gasoline that are based on octane levels: regular, mid-grade, and premium. Premium grade is the most expensive; the price difference between grades is generally constant at about ten cents per gallon.

there are many factors that affect the price of gasoline, but dramatically falling oil prices are a big part of it

Books
Supply and demand. The economy has turned so bad that demand for oil has decreased. This means supply is up so the price drops.
